Are you a fan of pasta and coincidentally in the central area?
The mega-popular TIPO has opened their sixth outlet at Wheelock Place. The interior is seriously adorable with all the pasta-shaped furniture around the space. Look out for the swirled-shaped pasta lights if you’re dining in!
TIPO is known for its affordable pasta (made in-house, mind you) and unique concepts for each outlet. The newest space, Tipo Strada is no exception. Sadly, the beloved build-your-own-pasta bar isn’t available here. But before you get too disappointed, there are other offerings to make up for it.
The “Strada” from their name literally means “Street” in Italian. Staying on theme, they offer street food like coffee, snacks, and of course, the fresh pasta that you came here for.
Before we ordered, we spotted the display of the three types of pasta offered: Campanelle, Mafalde, and Gemelli. An avid fan of TIPO would already have noticed this, but I’ll tell you anyway. Campanelle is a nori-based pasta that is exclusive to the outlet.
My friends and I got three dishes to try out: Creamy Chicken (S$16.50), Rose Duck (S$15.50), and Beef Bolognese (S$15.90). This entire meal actually changed my outlook on Italian cuisine.
I chose the Rose Duck and Campanella as my pasta base. Although I’m a novice in my knowledge of pasta, this easily nudged everything out of the way to become my favourite. The pink sauce was rich and creamy with feta crumbled all over. I also barely noticed the baby spinach in the dish (good news for all the vegetable haters).
My friends and I unanimously agreed that this was the best out of the three dishes.
Sue me for being biased but I think cream-based sauces are just better. This means my second favourite was the Creamy Chicken with the chosen pasta being Gemelli. The pasta is tossed in a rich white sauce with roasted mixed mushrooms and smoked chicken slices. Though, I would say the star of this dish would be the mushrooms with the flavour poking through the creaminess of the sauce.
I’m pretty neutral towards tomatoes, so the Beef Bolognese didn’t appeal much to me. Though, I did try out a couple of bites from my friend’s plate. She chose Mafalde for her pasta which had a pretty subtle taste of siracha. Most bolognese sauces I’ve tried tend to be on the sweeter side. I was pleasantly surprised that this wasn’t too sweet. Though, this still wouldn’t be my pick from the menu.
Before this, I’d never gotten the hype around Italian cuisine but this had certainly changed my mind. Overall, I would highly recommend the Rose Duck if you are heading down. Though, I think you can hardly go wrong with anything on their menu.
Psst, Tipo Strada is celebrating their opening and 11.11 with 111 free bowls of pasta on 11 November 2024, of course. To redeem this, all you have to do is to share our post to qualify.
Why not make this your 11.11 plan?
