1. Punggol Waterway Park

Enveloped by lush greenery, the North-Eastern part of Singapore is severely underrated. If you’re a nature lover who enjoys the calmness of water and the melodious chirping of birds, you might want to check out this cycling route.

Cruise down the mangroves and enjoy the serene waters surrounding Punggol Waterway bridges. Punggol Waterway Park is also one of the prettiest parks in Singapore, so while you’re there, don’t forget to update your Instagram feed.

2. Jurassic Mile

With gigantic, life-sized dinosaurs and huge dino eggs, this is one cycling trail with a unique, prehistoric view.

3. St John’s Island Trail

Taking a short vacation break outside of Singapore sounds like a great idea for most of us now. After these gruelling long months of not travelling, we’d take anything that remotely resembles an overseas getaway.

Here at St John’s and Lazarus Island, you’re able to explore the gold coasts of Singapore on your bicycle.

Bicycle and kick scooters rental are available at St John’s Island, and you can even rent kites, beach mats and tents to relax in after long hours of cycling. Bicycle and scooter rentals are clocked at S$25 for 2 hours per person, while the other packages with your choice of beach items start from S$40.

4. Marina Bay Loop

Travel along the Helix Bridge towards the Esplanade and the Merlion. This entire journey will take about 40 minutes to complete, so time it well if you want to catch that cinematic sunset en route. Watch the sky fade out from blue to bright citrus orange, with its luminous glow setting behind the skyscrapers.

5. Mandai Track 15

There aren’t many beginner-friendly mountain biking trails in Singapore, which makes mountain biking a little tougher to get into compared to regular cycling. 

Thankfully, if you’ve just gotten yourself a mountain bike and want to start out with a relatively simple trail, the Mandai Track 15 has easy slopes, smooth tracks, and no sharp drops or jumps — perfect for beginners who are just getting into the sport. Still, the trail has its fair share of sloping terrain, so you’ll nevertheless be getting your leg workout in for the day.

6. Sentosa Island

Most people visit Sentosa Island for its beaches and attractions, but did you know that the island is a great place to cycle too? 

There are three cycling routes available that cater to riders of varying levels. Beginners can cycle along the coast, while more seasoned cyclists looking for a good workout can take the Imbiah Trail Uphill or the dedicated on-road cycling lanes to Sentosa Cove Village.

The island has bicycle rental shops at Beach Station and Siloso Beach where you can rent a bike starting from S$15 per hour.

7. Rail Corridor

Filled with abundant greenery, the newly revamped Rail Corridor is a 24km trail that runs from Tanjong Pagar Railway Station to Woodlands Train Checkpoint. 

The best part? The trail passes right through the famous Bukit Timah Railway Station, which has reopened after 11 years with a cafe, a heritage gallery, and more exciting features. The popular spot is the perfect place to take a break, grab a bite, and snap some pictures before continuing down the trail.

If you prefer a shorter route though, you can also choose to just take on the Central Rail Corridor, the middle section of the trail that’s just 4km and includes the Bukit Timah Railway Station and iconic Bukit Timah truss bridge.

8. Northern Explorer Loop

This cycling route comprises some of the best nature spots in Singapore, including Ulu Sembawang Park Connector, Admiralty Park, and Lower Seletar Reservoir.

Enjoy your time riding through this route while spotting some of the cutest wildlife animals.

9. Ketam Mountain Bike Trail

For the brave hearts that are looking for something more difficult, this is for you. Situated at Pulau Ubin, this international standard Ketam Mountain Bike Trail is bound to send adrenaline pumping through your veins.

There’s a 10km bike trail that’s suitable for all levels, including beginners. The real challenge is its double-black diamond trail. Manoeuvre through muddy downhills and rocky bumps to unlock a series of bragging rights.

If you’re thinking of giving this route a try, you can access it by taking a 15-minute boat ride and do note that there is a fee of an additional S$2 to transport your bicycle.

Alternatively, you can also join Pulau Ubin’s bike tour where they’ll show you the best views around Pulau Ubin. Although there’s less freedom to explore on your own, the tour makes a great option to get navigation tips around Pulau Ubin — so you won’t feel FOMO.

10. Chestnut Nature Park

Mountain bikers that find it inconvenient to travel to Pulau Ubin can opt for Chestnut Nature Park instead. As the first park in Singapore to have dedicated mountain biking trails, the 8.2km trail caters to aspiring and seasoned mountain bikers. You can practise at the Chestnut Pump Track or tackle the Chestnut Bike Park, depending on your skill level.

11. Eastern Coastal Loop

Don’t mistake the Eastern Coastal Loop for East Coast Park! Although this route ends at East Coast Park, this loop treats you to an abundance of flora and fauna at Tampines Eco Green, as well as panoramic seaside views along Changi Beach Park and Bedok Jetty.

After a tiring ride, you can stop by for refreshments at the Bedok Food Centre where the famous Ye Lai Xiang Cheng Tng store is located.

12. Southern Ridges

You’ll pass through open green spaces such as the ‘Gateway to Nature’ and Telok Blangah Hill, before finally arriving at the iconic Henderson Waves. Take a break on the famous bridge, and maybe snap a picture or two against the pretty backdrop of the distinctive, undulating structure. 

To end your journey, make your way up to Mount Faber, where you’ll be able to take in panoramic views of Singapore from the various lookout points.

13. Western Adventure Loop

The trail will then take you through eight parks, including Dairy Farm Nature Park, famous for Singapore’s only quarry to be filled up with earth instead of water, and Pang Sua Park Connector with its two charming Butterfly Gardens.

The long-distance Coast to Coast (C2C) route cuts across various local park connectors, nature parks and heartlands. This offers you the full visual package of local sightseeing.

This trail can be completed within half a day’s time on your bicycle. As you’d be sharing footpaths with people, don’t forget to slow down for pedestrians!

The 36km islandwide loop will take you through Ang Mo Kio, the Kallang basin, and Punggol via the park connector networks, with multiple parks along the way where you can take in some nature and greenery.

16. Mandai Loop

That said, with a distance of 40km and multiple steep climbs, this route is definitely better suited for cyclists with some experience.

Popular among advanced cyclists, this bike trail tests your reflexes, memory, endurance and strength. The Bukit Timah Mountain Bike Trail challenges you through demanding inclines, swerves and rapid downslopes. This is undoubtedly a great place to upskill and beat your personal bests.

18. Seletar Loop

But since a large part of the route is on the road, definitely make sure you’re comfortable with road-riding before you attempt this one.

19. Kranji Marshes Loop

Behold the beauty of the tall tower overseeing nature’s beauty located at Kranji Marshes and the lush greenery of Macritchie Reservoir. This cycling experience will be one to remember for a long time.

20. Round Island Route (RIR)

Do none of these satisfy your boredom? Hop on the Round Island Route (RIR) and ride around the circumference of Singapore instead. The minimum distance that you’ll cover is an average of 150km, and there are multiple ways to plot your trip around the country.

Expect to shuttle through local park connectors and various attractions. You may even pass by the renowned Lamp Post 1 in Tuas, an official landmark owned by cyclists. By the way, don’t forget to strike a pose for your online posts!

Being an adult has given me the autonomy to do many things — such as impulsively changing my hair colour as and when I wish. I’ve tried plenty of non-bleach colour variations, but have never gone bold enough to bleach my entire scalp blonde. While it looked really cute for the ‘gram, the aftermath of the “Instagrammable” look is a disaster.

Noticeable issues after bleaching my hair

Firstly, I struggled with immense hair loss. I would wake up to strands of hair on my pillow, and since my blond hair contrasts significantly against my black-haired family members, I can no longer lie to myself and pretend that it’s someone else’s hair.

Secondly, my hair is no longer as bouncy and vibrant as before. I’d have to blow dry my hair to maintain its volume, or it’ll stay flat and lifeless for the rest of the day. Besides that, my scalp has also become oilier and itchier. This is sometimes accompanied by white flakes on my hair and piercing screams from me in the bathroom as a side effect. “I paid money to look cute!” I lamented.

After multiple nights of self-contemplation and nightmare stories by hair care experts on premature balding, I was convinced that I had to make a trip down to a hair and scalp care centre, TK TrichoKare, for some TLC (tender loving care) immediately.

“Nice music,” I thought to myself as I patiently waited in the private consultation room. Soothing zen music washed over me as I filled up a short questionnaire that was given to me. Unlike my initial expectations, I was surprised that they considered my lifestyle habits, and did not jump right into the diagnosis of my frizzy, blonde hair.

I bit my lip several times after realising the bad habits I’ve accumulated throughout my adulthood. It became apparent that hair bleaching was not the only problem for me. Other questions also prompted answers regarding current medication or allergies, to ensure customers’ health and safety.

Shortly, the hair and scalp specialist walked in. She greeted me brightly with a chirpy voice and briefed me through the process. Being a complete newbie in a setting like this, I appreciated her patience and thorough explanation through every step. “Dry? I thought my hair was oily!” I asked in confusion. My specialist must have done this plenty of times, but she still patiently explained how a dry scalp would secrete oil to replenish the lack of hydration, resulting in oily hair. This was why my hair was always slumping in grease. The impurities build-up also resulted in a flaky scalp, which explained my nasty dandruff situation now and then.

Most people, including me, live unaware that they have a dry scalp because of how oily their hair appears to be. Therefore, it becomes a toxic cycle, where the prolonged usage of the wrong hair care products worsens the scalp condition. Rather than self-diagnosing, this is why professional hair analysis is so essential.

With all these conditions, it resulted in a sad and malnutrition scalp which induced my constant hair fall. Each healthy, open-pore is supposed to grow about 2 to 3 strands of hair, but many of my pores were already empty or holding just a single strand. Some better performing pores are growing shorter and thinner strands.

I learned that my scalp simply could not hold or produce hair like it used to. The longer I take to rectify these problems, the worse it’ll become. While picking up a few strands of hair on the floor may seem minuscule, my specialist reminded me that it only takes 5 more strands to fall off on the side to give me a bald patch. Yikes.

European herbal remedies and technology

After the analysis, I was kindly ushered into the treatment room. This was where I would be pampered for the next 1.5 hours.

The hair and scalp specialist started by applying a customised European herbal hair masque on my scalp. This masque helps to clean out impurities, detox my scalp and remove excess sebum. As I was new to the ordeal, she patiently walked me through the steps and reasons why I was given this customised hair masque.

Since all masques are personalised with all-natural ingredients, there was no worry of incompatibility or having adverse chemicals eating into your scalp. In fact, the masque was so cooling and comfortable that I almost drifted off to sleep with the ambient music playing in the back.

After blow-drying my hair, the hair and scalp specialist started applying the customised ampoule (peptides) on my scalp. She was careful to go through row by row of hair to make sure she does not miss out on any hair follicle. This customised ampoule helps stimulate the scalp and increases hair growth and thickness, a much-needed aid for my hair woes.

The customised ampoule also helps to reduce inflammation and damage, as well as delay scalp ageing. Since my hair and scalp have been damaged post bleaching, this step was highly essential for new hair strands to grow healthily.

After applying the ampoule to my scalp, the specialist goes over every spot covered with the OxyJet. This process helps to accelerate the scalp’s cell metabolism and improve blood circulation. It also helps in replenishing the lack of hydration on my scalp, which was a much-needed aftercare treatment. While my sebum levels have been restored by the masque and hair bath, it’s essential to maintain the moisture level.

As my hair and scalp require a lot of tender care, the specialist also included a high-technological Photodynamic Therapy for my condition. This is by far the coolest part of my hair treatment. It involves a helmet looking device with red laser bulbs in it. The laser light supports hair regeneration and targets areas of the scalp which effectively accelerates healing. While having laser light on your head may sound intimidating, you can rest assured that there is no pain or discomfort at all.

By the end of the procedure, my scalp felt clean and rejuvenated. I was experiencing soul-level contentment.

Immediate follow-up consultation

I met up with my hair and scalp specialist again for a follow-up review right after the treatment. Many would be skeptical of one-time sessions because they don’t do much for long term damage. However, through the macro lens, I noticed that my clogged pores were all freed up.

I could also see my scalp a lot better, including the cluster of blood vessels peeking underneath. From April onwards, karting enthusiasts will be able to whiz down the corners of an indoor karting circuit situated at Resorts World Sentosa. This is made possible by the collaboration between Resorts World Sentosa and KF1 Karting.

RWS x KF1 Circuit Tiki

Held between 2 April to 30 June this year, this adrenaline-pumped event is called Circuit Tiki. It is located indoors at Resorts World Sentosa’s Carpark East, Orange Zone.

Running over 550 metres long, it encompasses 23 corners that are challenging to exercise.

KF1 Karting has a track record of bringing Singaporeans amazing Go-Kart circuits, whilst holding the largest karting track in Singapore till date. Partnering with Resorts World Sentosa, this formidable duo offers yet another entertainment source for Singaporeans.

This kart racing circuit will be open to the public and operates from 10am to 10pm daily. Even if you failed your BTT (Basic Theory Test), you don’t have to fret. There’s an easier course (25km/h) for novice racers priced at S$28 and a more advanced course (40km/h) at S$35.

Certain prerequisites needed for karting

Do take note that there are certain requirements to be met if you’re keen to embark on advanced karting. You will need a valid driving or motorcycle license as required by BCA Amusement Ride Regulations.

Both local and foreign licenses are accepted and racers also have to flash their licenses for verification.

If you’re keen to race, you have to be a minimum of 1.4m tall as part of safety regulations. You will need covered shoes at all times, as well as hair nets and helmets which will be provided by KF1 Karting.
