Charr’d is Singapore’s first halal steakhouse to serve the best A5 wagyu from Japan alongside salmon belly cubes, lamb rack & more

Halal steaks are not uncommon in Singapore, but halal A5 wagyu steaks? Now we’re talking!

Here’s a steakhouse you won’t wanna miss, especially if you’re a fan of the fatty, melt-in-mouth texture A5 wagyu is known for (or just steak in general)— Charr’d along Changi Road.

Opened by the same team behind halal steak and yakiniku joint Tomahawk King (they’re right next to each other), Charr’d is the first halal steakhouse in Singapore to fire up the prized A5 Kuroge wagyu beef from the Mie prefecture, regarded as the “best Japanese beef in the world”.

It is also the only restaurant on our shores to buy and import whole A5 Wagyu Kuroge cows from Japan, so as to ensure freshness and sustainability.

But first, the space. The smoky black ceilings and dark wood furniture of the casually-outfitted restaurant are lit up by neon red and orange signs, which reenact the inner furniture of the restaurant’s grill ovens.

It sets the pace for a chill night out, where you and your friends can tuck into good cuts of meats, no-frills sides, and mocktails.

Kick off your meal with starters like the irresistible A5 Wagyu Cubes (S$19), tender, juicy, and delightfully fatty cubes of succulent A5 wagyu served with shimeji mushrooms and baby spinach.

Alternatively, the Salmon Cube Taré (S$14) comprises charred salmon belly nuggets glazed with housemade yakiniku no tare (yakiniku sauce), served alongside snow pea shoots, caramelised onion, and a house bearnaise sauce.

Ready to fire up the grill? There are three cuts of A5 wagyu on the menu, which include the likes of A5 Sirloin (S$38) and A5 Tenderloin (S$58), all grilled to your choice of doneness (I’ll accept nothing above medium rare) with a little more than a sprinkling of flaky salt.

Those who gravitate towards all things indulgent will absolutely adore the A5 Ribeye (S$48), a richly marbled cut that simply melts in your mouth.

You can enjoy all that and more if you order the Heavenly Meat Board (S$198), a stunning sharing platter of meat that easily fits up to four (or less, if you’re feeling particularly carnivorous), featuring all three of the aforementioned meats, as well as 400 grams of Butchers Secret (U.P. S$28), Australian grain-fed hangar steak.

The platter also comes with your choice of two sauces — choose from House Bearnaise (S$5), Chimichurri (S$5), Wasabi Mayo (S$4), Yakiniku No Tare (S$4), and/or Ghost Peppercorn Mayo (S$4).

Feeling all beefed out? The beautifully charred (hence the name) and non-gamey Charr’d Lamb Rack (S$38) boasts a great ratio of fat to meat, paired with a mildly zesty house mint sauce that hits the spot with every bite.

Savour your meats with sides like the Truffle Fries (S$13), twice-fried beef tallow shoestring fries tossed in truffle oil and finished off with charred shaved parmesan, and Mentaiko Jojos (S$12), fried wedges slathered in charred mentaiko sauce, tobiko, and nori.

On a side note, how many times have I written the word “charred”?

There’s also the classic Cream’d Moonlight Spinach (S$13), because steak and creamed spinach go hand in hand, topped with charred pine nuts and a wobbly onsen egg.

But one side you must, must order is the Charr’d Broccoli (S$12), crunchy broccoli charred over an open fire and tossed with roasted pine nuts, chilli shavings, bonito flakes, and miso vinegar.

It was all-in-one sweet, savoury, and umami — even my vegetable-hating dining partner (who only eats broccoli in deep-fried lok lok form) thoroughly enjoyed it!

Wash everything down with a selection of tasty mocktails. Notable mention goes out to the Smoke Above Water (S$12), a sweet-sour concoction of ginger, smoke oak, wild mint, lemon juice, orange, and soda.

Those with a sweet tooth will enjoy the Muscat Kick Fix (S$12), a fruity and refreshing bev comprising white grape, elderflower, orange, and sprite soda.

If you’re feeling dessert-y, go for the House Croffles (S$13), a waffle-pressed croissant (croffle) topped with dark chocolate gelato, chocolate syrup, and of course, a cherry on top.
