10 popular clothing shops in Johor Bahru besides Padini offering trendy fashion styles like y2k, coquette-inspired, “Douyin-core”, gender-neutral and many more

by Sheree Chua

Padini is no doubt the go-to fashion outlet whenever we cross the border and it’s no surprise why. From offering trendy yet affordable clothes to their in-house Vincci shoes and Vincci Accessories, Padini is the literal definition of a one-stop shop.

However, if you’re a JB veteran and have seen everything and anything Padini has to offer, you’re probably itching to discover other clothing shops in the city (which they’re aplenty of, fortunately).

This is where I step in to offer all the recommendations you need. Here are some of the most popular clothing shops in Johor Bahru. And, yes, they sell incredibly fashionable clothes — think high-quality basics, y2k-inspired outfits, Muslimah clothing and many more.

1. Threads

Something to know about me is that I tend to lean towards a more minimalist, specifically Scandinavian, fashion style. Ever heard of the “coastal grandmother” aesthetic? Yup, that’s me.

If not, it’s essentially a style in which casual yet elevated clothes take centre stage. We tend to shy away from embellished designs and overly loud prints and colours, so we’ll never be caught dead wearing graphic tees or cheetah-print bottoms.

If this resonates with you, you’ll have to pay a visit to Threads at Taman Mount Austin, where you can find timeless clothing pieces like button-downs, pleated trousers, short-sleeve shirts and many more, all priced between RM30 (S$8.63) and RM110 (S$31.65).

The shop sits on the second and third floors below Hunger Hotpot, with the second-floor catering to more feminine pieces in pink and the third-floor offering items in neutral tones like greys and blacks.

Boyfriends, feel free to relax on the curved sofa while you wait!

2. Oni J

Another clothing shop located at Taman Mount Austin is Oni J, which I’ll go so far as to say they’re an affordable alternative to the ever-popular Love, Bonito.

The reason? They sell some of the most work-appropriate clothing pieces and even two-piece sets with a matching top and bottom for those lazy outfit days. While the quality of their clothes is similar to those offered by our local blogshops, they do not come with the same price tags!

Oh, and they sell shoes and bags as well, which are displayed alongside womenswear on the first floor.

Guys, I did not forget about y’all. Head up to the second floor where you can browse from a selection of classic menswear, including outerwears, hoodies, t-shirts and more.

3. NRN Concept Store

Regular customers call NRN Concept Store an on-site Taobao store and I can totally see why. For avid Taobao users, you’ve a high chance of stumbling upon something on your wishlist here. The fact that they’re also popular on RED only adds to their appeal.

While some of their clothes are modest for work or school, the majority of their pieces are better suited for going-out and parties. They have stunning dresses and tops popular among Douyin XJJ (xiao jie jie), in addition to cottage-core dresses, designer-inspired sweaters and unique bottoms.

Prices are also reminiscent of Taobao’s, ranging between RM40 (S$11.51) to RM100+ (S$28.77+), with the added advantage of being able to try on the clothes in their fitting rooms.

4. DI Studios

Editorial or high-fashion clothing has a reputation of being expensive but DI Studios is here to change that. With prices ranging from RM79 (S$22.72) to RM600 (S$172.59), their clothing makes for versatile pieces perfect for either curating a capsule wardrobe or taking fashion-forward photoshoots for the ‘gram.

Expect a lot of blacks, greys, whites and khakis, with the occasional bright reds and blues for their colour palette. If I have to name-drop a brand that DI Studios is similar to, it’s definitely COS, the higher-end sibling of H&M.

I also recommend checking out their shoes, which are hella cool. Platform boots, leather mules and metallic loafers can be found here.

For something completely opposite from the edgy and contemporary style, Megumi’s Room By tyng has got you covered. This place is heaven for anyone who adores everything coquette-inspired, feminine ruffles and, of course, florals.

Just from their Instagram alone, I’ve spotted many ribbon-tie dresses, ruffled maxi skirts and crochet cardigans — all suitable for picnic dates and garden weddings.

Do note that you’ll have to remove your shoes before entering the store but rest assured, the floors are clean regularly!

6. Calaqisya

Hijabi girlies or anyone who prefers to dress more modestly, y’all can head on over to Calaqisya. The name should sound familiar as they’re one of the most famous locally based Muslim-friendly clothing shops in Johor Bahru.

Photo: @calaqisya/instagram

Aside from kaftans and kurongs, Calaqisya sells a wide range of innerwear for various skin tones and prayerwear like prayer veils. You can also say goodbye to wrinkled clothing with their ‘Ironless’ collection, which caught my eye as it’s fuss-free for lazy individuals (shamelessly me) or for travelling.

If shipping isn’t an issue for you, their online store has even more offerings, including menswear, childrenswear, and lifestyle goods like prayer mats and bath and body products.

VeryToys is the ultimate destination for y2k-inspired streetwear clothing. Whether you’re looking for distressed denim pieces, eye-catching accessories or bold graphic tees, VeryToys has it all.

As they’re conveniently located at Taman Mount Austin, there’s no reason not to make a pit stop when you’re in the area, especially since you’ll be accompanied by three cats during your shopping.

Both womenswear and menswear collections are incredibly trendy and one-of-a-kind, so they aren’t generic blogshop clothes (in case that’s a concern).

Getthelook Emma is one of the clothing shops in Johor Bahru that specialises in everyday basics. The clothes are still cute, obviously, but they’re a lot more wearable and can be easily mixed and matched together.

Girlies with a more elegant fashion style can shop from their variety of jacket-style cardigans, a-line skirts and feminine dresses, while those who are more laid-back can shop for their tank tops and two-piece lounge sets.

Their latest collection even features a Lambskin Espadrille (S$35.95/RM125) that looks suspiciously similar to the popular beige-and-black Chanel espadrilles.

9. J&Y Fashion Style

Move aside Mid Valley Southkey or City Square, Eco Palladium is set to be the next hot spot in terms of shopping malls in JB. There are simply tons of things to do here, from getting papped in a photobooth at Kacha Kacha Studio or playing in an escape room at Lost in JB.

Now, you can complement your day trip to this place with some retail therapy at J&Y Fashion Style. Their clothes are crazy affordable, with nothing over S$50, so you might want to protect your wallet — you could easily walk out with more than you planned!

That’s because you can find all sorts of clothing pieces, be it fancy dresses for date nights and birthday parties or blazers and sweaters for corporate life.

A section of the store is also dedicated to Kpop-inspired outfits, featuring clothes you might have seen on the members of Kpop groups like aespa, IVE and Le Sserafim.

10. ANAABU

Photo: ANAABU.CO/facebook

Gender-neutral clothing is all the rage these days as it allows for more flexibility in an individual’s style. If you’re looking to break free from the constraints of gender norms, you’ll feel right at home at ANAABU, one of the most up-and-coming clothing shops in Johor Bahru that has housed themselves along Jalan Tan Hiok Nee.

Photo: ANAABU.CO/facebook

All of their clothes spot a clean silhouette and are made from breathable materials like 100% cotton and linen — perfect for our humidity. Though their prices are on the higher side, they’ll last a lifetime in your closet. That’s a fair trade in my books.

What’s more, well-known vintage thrift shops REBIRTH INC. and Kedai Dhoby Shanghai are stationed just opposite the store, so you can pop over afterward.

Next time you’re in Johor Bahru, skip the usual suspects and dive into these stylish clothing shops.

Who knows? You might just discover your new favourite store and walk away with a new wardrobe!
