You can now find BBQ seafood platters and a S$9.90 free-flow salad bar buffet at this hidden Japanese charcoal grill & bar by the pool

You’ve probably already heard of Guriru, the (now not-so) hidden charcoal grill and bar situated by a pool.

The brainchild of Anagram Food Lab and Chef Teppei Yamashita, Guriru is very different from the latter’s current concepts, Unagi Tei (better known as Man Man) and Hana-Hana, as it features a unique alfresco space that resembles a beachside bar.

It’s also tucked away in the Medical Alumni Clubhouse just off the CBD near Outram Park MRT station (just take exit 7 and you’ll be good to go), perfect for those seeking a mini getaway from the hustle and bustle.

As night falls, the entire space is decked out in fairy lights, which adds a cosy, almost romantic, touch to the already-chill ambience.

We recommend visiting from 6pm onwards — for the vibes and for the revamped menu, which features Grill Omakase Sets (for two) and a free-flow salad buffet bar.

These all-in-one sets are ideal for those who want to try everything — it’s hard to choose from such an extensive array of meats and seafood grilled to perfection over an open charcoal fire, obviously!

If you want the best of both worlds, order the mid-range Party Set (S$79++, U.P. S$119), comprising Grilled Oysters, Japanese Abalone, Squid, Gindara or Salmon, Chicken Thigh, Squid, Meltique Beef, Eggplant, and Truffled Cheese Cauliflower.

But if you wanna go all out, the extravagant Enjoy Set (S$99++, U.P. S$149) showcases only the best of what Guriru has to offer — namely King Prawns, Japanese Abalone, Grilled Oysters, Kurobuta Pork Belly, Asari Clams, Chicken Thigh, Wagyu Beef, Truffled Cheese Cauliflower, Cabbage, and a Fish of the Day (Nodoguro, Salmon, or Gindara).

It’s a mouthful (literally) that’ll have you knocking back ice-cold beers on the side.

Notable mention goes out to the indulgent slow-cooked Kurobuta Pork Belly (U.P. S$15), which was irresistibly tender and juicy, with unctuous, melt-in-mouth fat, as well as the Asari Clams, in an addictive garlicky broth I couldn’t stop slurping up.

My dining partners and I also enjoyed the Gindara (American Black Cod, S$17), fleshly and mildly sweet with a creamy mouthfeel — bound to be a hit for those who like fatty fish!

If you order any of the sets, you’ll also get to enjoy a Free Flow Salad Bar Buffet for just S$9.90++ per person (U.P. S$29.90 without set order), which features a rotating menu of 20 items.

During this 90-minute buffet, you can fill up on snacks and sides like fries, salad greens, pizza, noodles, fried rice, and even dessert. There’s nothing to shout about, taste-wise, but it’ll more than suffice for big eaters who aren’t too picky.

Do note that food waste will be charged at S$15 per 100g, so don’t take what you can’t finish!
