Jaguarita’s is an underrated Mexican-inspired joint with cheesy birria tacos, charcoal-grilled ribeye, loaded nachos & more in Buona Vista

I don’t crave Mexican cuisine very often, but when I do, those cravings hit hard.

If you’ve been longing to stuff your face with a couple of juicy tacos or cheese-stuffed quesadillas, here’s a hidden gem in Buona Vista worth dropping by.

One of the more underrated spots in Singapore’s rather robust Mexican food scene is the vibrant Jaguarita’s at The Metropolis, specialising in “Mexican-inspired, comfort food, for the fellow urbanite”.

The menus are pretty different during the day and at night. At lunchtime, you’ll be able to find tacos (in sets of two or three), wraps, and bowls with the option to top up for set meals, that’ll keep you feeling satiated, and hopefully not sleepy, throughout the day.

As night falls, gather around for a fiesta of tacos, charcoal-grilled meats and seafood, and sharing plates.

It’s always fun to snack on Chips & Salsa & Guac (S$14), but why not take it up a notch with proper Nachos (S$14), loaded with tomato salsa, lime crema, beans, and melted cheese?

As for the tacos, there are plenty to choose from, including the popular Pescadillas (S$7), beer-battered fish tacos with lime crema and purple cabbage, and the Carnitas (S$7), which see tender slow-cooked pork cheek, ear, and shoulder balanced out with green salsa and onions.

But if I were you, I’d head straight for the Queso Birria (S$8), which marries 48-hour slow-cooked beef and melted cheese — a match made in heaven! And like most authentic birria tacos, it is also served with mother stock consommé for your dipping pleasure.

Those dining in a larger group can head straight for the Taco Platter (S$40), which can easily feed three to four diners, given that it comprises three different meats (birria beef, carnitas, pollo), salsa, and tortillas. It’s the best opportunity to DIY the taco of your dreams.

Be it Carne Asada (S$26) sliced ribeye with chimichurri and grilled peppers, or salsa romesco-slathered Grilled Squid (S$28), there’s something for everyone (well, kind of) when it comes to the selection of charcoal-grilled goodness.

Once again, you can try a little bit of everything by ordering the Grilled Platter (S$58), comprising chicken thigh, pork ribs, agave prawns, grilled peppers, tomato salsa, and fresh condiments.

Jaguarita’s also has 16 seasonal craft beers on constant rotation, alongside a diverse selection of agave spirits, like tequila and mezcal, which you can guzzle down in the form of a cocktail or three.

I foresee that Jaguarita’s will soon become the taco the town, but till then, it’s a great time to hit them up for hearty Mexican fare in the West!

Reservations can be made here.
