If you’ve already tried Mister Donut and Tim Horton’s, and have yet to come close to satisfying your sweet tooth, here’s a dessert chain that’s not from China, Japan, Korea, or the USA that may just be right up your alley.
Hailing from Australia is Lukumades, a popular doughnut chain that has just opened its first outlet in Singapore along Arab Street.
Lukumades (loukoumádes) are essentially Greek “doughnuts”, or deep-fried dough balls sold at dedicated patisseries all over Greece, typically served as an afternoon treat with honey, cinnamon, walnuts and/or chocolate sauce.
Here, you’ll find Lukumades’ rendition of handcrafted Greek doughnuts, but with a modern twist, prepared in the flavours we all know and love.
These bite-sized dough balls are said to be perfectly balanced — crunchy and golden brown, with a light fluffy interior.
All doughnuts, which are vegan on their own, are sold in boxes of 10, and come in 18 flavours, many of which are inspired by popular desserts and chocolate bars — the kind most of us enjoyed as kids — like Kinder Bueno, Twix, Snickers, and Nutella.
I can foresee flavours like the Pistachio (S$13), pistachio spread topped with chocolate flakes; Matcha (S$12), matcha-infused white chocolate; and the Lotus Crunch (S$13), melted biscoff with Lotus crushed biscuits, being a hit with Singaporeans.
Otherwise, keep it simple with the cinnamon sugar-coated Plain Jane (S$12); original Glazed (S$12); or eat it like the Greeks do, in the form of The Original (S$12), with honey and cinnamon.
Fans of good ol’ custard-filled doughnuts will probably enjoy the Bougatsa (S$12), which is inspired by the traditional Greek custard-filled breakfast pastry.
Go for the Half Half (S$15) if you’d like to try two different flavours in one box!
You can also find Gelato (from S$5 for one scoop) in flavours like Pistachio, Mango Passion Sorbet, and Tiramisu, which we’d recommend pairing with the doughnuts.
The same flavours can be enjoyed in the form of Shakes (S$8.50), so feel free to sip on your favourite creamy concoctions of Cookies & Cream, Tella, or Hazelnut — depending on what your heart (and tummy) desire.
Of course, all the usual espresso-based options are available, with unique standouts like the Greek-inspired Freddo Cappuccino (S$9), which combines iced espresso with frothed cold milk, as well as the decadent Bueno Hot Chocolate (from S$7).
Lukumades is still in its soft launch phase, so stay tuned for the official opening hours!
Will you be getting your hands on these delectable, easy-to-eat doughnuts the next time dessert cravings strike?
