We’ve all been on the other side of the SafeEntry booth — scanning our TraceTogether app like clockwork before entering any space, holding our phones up to the staff member sitting on the other end. Sometimes they’re friendly and smile back, other times they let you pass with a mere nod that if you were to so much as blink, you’d miss. You know why? Because their job sucks.
They have to put up with hundred, maybe even thousands of shoppers everyday, a handful of whom try to cheat the system by flashing screenshots and other sorts of erroneous information instead. And now, you get to feel their pain too. Created by reddit user u/Dartteon, Scan Please! is a free-to-play, online game that will have you in the hot seat of a SafeEntry staff.
Increased difficulty over 8 shifts in different malls
It tests your ability to spot cheaters of the system, whom you must reject from entering the mall, all while letting other visitors in. It starts out simple — it’s just a matter of checking if they’ve scanned their SafeEntry app, or not.
Beware of maskless visitors, memelords & other truant shoppers
However, as you work more shifts, you’ll realise that new challenges present themselves along the way, such as shoppers attempting to show you memes instead (not that I’m complaining, but a cat isn’t going to hold up in the eyes of the law), maskless visitors, and even trickier ones like SafeEntry passes displaying the wrong date or location.
Later on in the game, there’s even a timed stage where you’ll have to get as many accuracies as possible within a time limit.
You get warnings for mistakes before it’s game over
Check carefully, because for every mistake you make, you’ll receive a strike from disappointed security uncle. Though, you can take comfort in knowing that there aren’t any real consequences in letting wrongly shoppers in here. For one, you’re not putting an entire shopping mall at a public health risk or anything, so there’s that.
Story mode vs arcade mode
Once you’re done with exploring all eight levels in story mode, it’s time to break out the grown up pants and try your hand at arcade mode. If you’re confident enough, try to beat the high score of the day — not to win a prize, but the satisfaction in knowing that you’re the best SafeEntry personnel out there. And that it might be time for a career switch.
