While new gelato cafes keep popping up everywhere in Singapore, very few offer anything new besides quirky flavours. Popular gelato shop Burnt Cones’ new sister cafe Up in Smoke is an exception, adding a unique element to their ice cream — smoke.
The new cafe is located at NEWest, an up-and-coming mall that has seen many popular new openings such as Simple Cafe pop up.
Small and cosy, Up in Smoke’s cafe space sports a minimalistic interior that’s a sleek combination of wood and grey tones. Dark marbled floors, grey concrete backdrops and a black ice cream counter give it a nice modern vibe.
What makes Up in Smoke different from its sister cafe is their unique Applewood Smoked Waffles (S$10). Their crispy waffles are engulfed in smoke then sealed inside a glass lid, before being brought to the table.
That’s when you should get ready your phones and camera — the lid is lifted at the table and glorious whiffs of smoke are wafted into the air. Quite the spectacular sight which would fit right into your IG or TikTok feeds.
They also offer the Applewood Smoked Waffles two scoops of gelato for S$20.
The ice cream selection at Up in Smoke is also mostly similar to their sister cafe, with 14 of Burnt Cones’ signature artisanal gelato on display. Single scoops go for S$5, double scoops for S$9, while signature flavours cost an additional S$1 and supremo S$2.
Some cool flavours here include Earl Grey, Yam, Madagascar Vanilla, Black Sesame, and Strawberry Basil. But if you want something smoky to go with your smoky waffles, they also have a Scamorza smoked cheese ice gelato.
Unlike Burnt Cones, Up in Smoke also serves cafe-style savouries such as the Philly Cheesesteak (S$12), as well as other brunch classics like scrambled eggs from 9am to 11am.
A great new ice cream spot for those staying in the farther West part of Singapore, which generally didn’t have much in the way of trendy cafes. That’s starting to change, and Up in Smoke is an interesting new spot with an interesting concept that might be worth checking out.
