The majority of mookata places aren’t halal-certified as they use pork lard in their cooking process. But over at Sedap Thai, beef fat is used instead, so you can happily round up your Muslim friends for a mookata sesh.

You can order ala carte items from the menu, but the Standard Platter (S$22 for two pax) is the most affordable and popular choice.

It comes with a vegetable basket with cabbage, golden mushrooms, kang kong, and tang hoon, as well as seafood and marinated meats like garlic chicken and black pepper beef. Otherwise, go for the All-You-Can-Eat Buffet (S$22/pax excluding seafood items) and eat your fill without breaking the bank.

There are several halal hotpot buffets out there, but Suki Suki Hot Pot is probably the only Thai hotpot establishment that serves Thai Basil Chicken, a variation of chicken broth simmered with sweet basil leaves, as a soup base, alongside classics like Tom Yum Goong and Singapore Lemak Laksa.

Besides having over 40 ingredients to choose from, patrons can fork out an additional S$4.90++/pax for free-flow drinks and desserts, on top of the usual buffet with prices starting at S$22.90++ for adults.

If you miss their fully-customisable acai bowls, you’ll be happy to know that the cafe is finally back in business, and they’re now at City Gate along Beach Road.

The minimalistic California-inspired cafe sports a unique design, decked out in cool white tones and coastal accents. The usual tables and chairs are swapped for a stair tread concept, where you can choose to either sit cross-legged on the steps or chill out at a counter in the corner.

To top it off, their acai bowls (S$9.90 or S$14.90) are customisable and comes with unlimited toppings — all at a fixed price.

There’s no need to stick to the standard Acai flavour when you can mix and match a variety of bases. This includes flavours such as Pitaya, Matcha, Creamy Coconut, Strawberry Chocolate Protein, Blue Chia Pudding, Raspberry Chia Pudding, and Tropical Paradise, a blend of peach, mango, and pineapple.

All bases are prepared without any added sugars or dairy, in order to let the natural sweetness of fruits shine.

After choosing your bases, head on to the topping isle, where you’ll be presented with an array of fresh fruits like strawberries, bananas, apples, and blueberries.

Other toppings (there are over 30 to choose from) such as espresso powder, matcha powder, maple pecan granola, toasted coconut, agave, and goji berries are also available, which helps to add extra texture and flavour to your smoothie bowl. 

An acai bowl isn’t completed if it isn’t finished off with a drizzle of nut butter, and at Cornercove, their spreads are freshly churned. Whether it’s almond, peanut or cashew butter, you can be sure that it’s served in its purest form.

Since the toppings are unlimited, you can deck your bowl with whatever your heart desires — only if they don’t topple.

We opted for one of the classic combinations of Matcha & Coconut with honey nut granola, honey, banana, blueberries, cacao nibs, almond flakes, goji berries, sunflower seeds, shredded coconut flakes, and a mix of almond and cashew butter — filling and well-balanced!

But really, the possibilities are endless, so feel free to go all out and DIY the smoothie bowl of your wildest (and healthiest) dreams.

Wan Wan Thai Cafe

The irresistible Shibuya honey toasts from Thailand’s beloved After You Dessert Cafes are certainly worth travelling for, but Wan Wan Thai Cafe is here to satisfy those cravings — without you having to book a plane ticket.

Tittle Tattle

Too many sweets can be nauseating for some. But if you’re the type that lives for the artery-clogging, give-you-cavities kind of sugar-high, the Tittle Tattle Disasters (S$23) will knock your socks off. 

With a maniacal combination of a fluffy Belgian waffle topped with ice cream, macarons, a cone biscuit, marshmallows, Kinder Buenos, strawberries, gem biscuits and finally, icing sugar, this is a treat that’ll keep you up all night.

This is one of the few dessert cafes that open till the wee hours of the morning from Friday to Sunday. Besides specialising in waffles, Tittle Tattle is also known for its vintage theme. Neon-lit signs can be found on its bricked wall interior, and an old school jukebox sits at the corner at the cafe. With chill tunes and good vibes all around, you’re in for a great evening.

Lickers

Half of the year has passed and if you’ve procrastinated on your 2022’s weight-loss resolution, there’s no harm in putting it off for another day. At Lickers, it’s hard to keep yourself in control when an additional scoop of ice cream on a waffle only costs S$2.50.

The ice cream parlour handcrafts all of its noshes, but Oreo Yakult and Milo Mallow are the ones to try. A Lonely (single scoop) goes for S$3.50, while a Buddy (double scoop) costs S$6. Since it’s difficult to find affordable ice cream places, we say that it’s a night to let loose and just load the scoops up.

Gong He Guan (Geylang)

It’s been raining cats and dogs recently and if you’re craving a no-nonsense, piping hot bowl of dessert to warm your tummy, Gong He Guan is the way to go. Originating from Hong Kong, this small dessert cafe opens past midnight and serves up authentic traditional desserts. 

An assortment of traditional desserts such as Rock Melon with Sago (S$4.20), Gui Ling Gao (S$6.80), and White Fungus Papaya (S$3.90) can be found on its menu. If you’re feeling under the weather, a bowl of Original Herbal Tea (S$5) ought to do the trick — you can even ask the auntie to add Cough or Sore Throat Powder into the mix.

Since most hawkers and eateries close at 10pm, we can’t get enough of traditional dessert cafes that open past midnight.

Hay Gelato

We know that ice cream and waffles have taken up quite a bit of space in our list, but you can’t blame us when those smooth, creamy and luscious scoops are just waiting to be eaten. Instead of the usual round scoop, at Hay Gelato, a small indentation is made at the top of the ice cream for the staff to add complimentary toppings of your choice.

A total of 12 flavours are offered, but we recommend going for the signature Smoked Hay (S$5.20), where real hay is smoked and infused into a milk gelato, then topped with cocoa nibs. 

With a chic and cosy interior like this, you’ll be tempted to overstay your welcome.

The Whale Tea SG (Rivervale Mall)

Forget ice cream, bubble teas are the new comfort food for lonely people up at 2am. It’s a pity that most boba stores close at 10pm — but there’s one that prevails through the night. The Whale Tea’s Rivervale Mall outlet is the only bubble tea dessert store in Singapore that’s not only open past midnight but also operates 24/7.

The first thing that you’ll notice on their menu board is the baby blue colour gradient in their drinks. The blue comes from spirulina (a blue-green algae superfood) and it gives your drink an extra boost of nutrients. 

With such a pretty drink in hand, maybe it isn’t so bad to be lonely after all.

The Korean coffee chain offers light refreshments such as cakes and brownies, along with Injeolmi toasts and bingsu.

There is no shortage of dessert cafes in Tanjong Pagar, but traditional Chinese desserts are certainly hard to come by. Enter Darkness Dessert, which opens till 1am with a menu of both traditional and modern dessert offerings.

Portions are on the larger side, so round up your friends and family for Cheng Teng (S$4.50), Mango Pomelo Sago with Coconut Ice Cream (S$6.50), and of course, the towering Grass Jelly Ice with Lychee (S$7.80).

Time For Thai SG

This is one of those midnight dessert cafes that’ll instantly transport you to +66. The Mango Sticky Rice (S$6.90) at Time For Thai SG is drenched in copious amounts of velvety coconut milk, which makes the rice to cream ratio absolutely perfect.

Other authentic Thai desserts such as Red Ruby (S$6.90) and Tapioca with Coconut Milk (S$5.90) are sold at an affordable price too. But perhaps the best part of this restaurant is that there’s no additional fee for GST and service charge.

Cafe de Muse

If you like cake and bingsu, you’ll have the best of both worlds at Cafe de Muse, a dessert cafe that opens past midnight. Tucked away at Shaw House, this hidden cafe may have gone unnoticed even by the CBD workers.

They serve up a variety of desserts, but the ones to note are the Fresh Melon (S$22) bingsu, which features shaved ice in a carved melon bowl, and The Chocolate Supreme (S$20), a sponge cake enclaved in a chocolate shell.

Served with an indulgent hot chocolate sauce to melt the shell away, a mixed berry compote for a splash of acidity, and vanilla ice cream for a soft creaminess, the dessert gradually reveals itself in a medley of flavours.

We understand that durian is a fruit that’s poison to some, but for the durian lovers, this Durian Snow Ice (S$9.50) at Dessert First is probably everything that you’ve ever asked for. The only thing that some of us know about mahjong is the word “Pong”, but that won’t stop us from visiting this quirky mahjong-themed dessert cafe. Tian Wang 甜旺 stays open till 2am, which is late, but not as late as the mahjong rounds played by our friends.

Demon Slayer Season 2’s debut

As said previously, Demon Slayer Season 2 has been set for the Entertainment District. But company Funimation has announced that the smash-hit Mugen Train feature film will also be turned into a seven-episode series that will start airing on October 10. Well, at least our tears for Rengoku weren’t for nothing.

Fans may think that the series may be some sort of cheap cut to tease us into Season 2, but that’s not the case. The episode series will include “70 new scenes, new music tracks, new open and ending animation, episode previews and new theme songs.”

Given that Mugen Train is just under two hours long, seven 20-ish minute episodes would mean a lot more footage. And a lot more depressing moments.

For now, Funimation has announced that the Mugen Train arc will be available to stream on the Funimation website along with Hulu and Crunchyroll.

All of the build-ups would then lead to Demon Slayer Season 2, in the Entertainment District arc, which is set to air on Sunday, December 5. 

Shaking the world with its grisly yet anguished hands, Demon Slayer remains a unique success in anime. There’s still a good amount of manga left for adaptation, so we’ll be seeing it around for a while. 

For those who’ve not picked up the series, Demon Slayer was first serialized on Shueisha’s shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump in February 2016, but it was its debut on Netflix in 2019 that received critical acclaim and numerous awards. As of February 2021, the manga has over 150 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time.

Adorable Doraemon plushies and paintings welcome visitors in, and while there will be no gadgets to do your work for you, there’s a bubble tea menu that’ll provide the same amount of joy.

Unlike many other stores where a cup of bubble tea could cost you the same amount as a decent meal, prices at this Doraemon-themed shop start at only S$2.

Healthy alternatives such as Rosehip & Hibiscus (S$2), Peppermint (S$2), and Rooibos Caramel (S$2) provide a cooling refreshment during a humid day, while other options such as the Irish Cream Milk Tea (S$3) will satisfy those that prefer dairy in their beverages.

Other dairy choices include Hazelnut (S$3), Brown Sugar (S$3), and even Gula Melaka (S$3) Milk Tea, but daredevils can try their Mocktail Series instead.

The Mocktail Series has the likes of Mauritan Sunrise and Hawaiian Blue on its menu, and you have the option to include a mix of fruits in it or have it plain. Having the drink by itself costs S$3.50, while the addition of fruits will only set you back an extra S$0.50.

But perhaps the best part of this Doraemon-themed bubble tea shop is that it offers complimentary black pearls. There are other topping choices such as Konjac Jellies (S$0.50) and Coconut Jellies (S$0.50), which’ll probably go better with the fruity options.

For those living in the East, this may just be the cheapest bubble tea store in the area yet.

Softhaus in Great World

But before we dive in, it is to note that Softhaus isn’t just any run-off-the-mill ice cream parlour. Founded by Janice Wong, a celebrated dessert chef and also the owner of the famous 2am: dessert bar, the ice cream flavours here took half a year of research and development before being launched.

Since ice cream should be a universal treat, flavours include four sorbets, six keto-friendly, and five vegan-friendly options, so there’s something for everyone.

There are fruity choices such as the Strawberry Sorbet and Yuzu Sorbet, and there’s also the Avocado banana — a heavenly combination of a creamy mouthfeel with subtly sweet notes.

For the people who’d like to play it safe, Softhaus offers the usual options such as Cookies & Cream, Madagascar Vanilla Bean, and Hazelnut too.

Each scoop of ice cream costs S$6 or S$7, depending on the flavour you choose. As much as you’d like to load on the ice cream, there’s a maximum of three scoops in a single order.

However, you can choose to have your treat in a cup, or enjoy it on a Cone (S$1) or a Waffle Bowl (S$1.50) for extra indulgence.

Once you’ve chosen your desired flavour, head on to the toppings section. Glass jars and towers hold a myriad of candy choices, guaranteed to excite even the adults. 

Over 20 choices are available, with offerings such as Popcorn (S$0.50), Iced Gem Biscuits (S$0.50), Cotton Candy (S$1), and even the raved Speculoos (S$0.50). Choose wisely, though. You’re only allowed to pile up a maximum of three toppings!

Each topping is then meticulously arranged by hand, so this is one scoop that’ll probably end up on the gram’.

Located at Basement One of the newly revamped Great World, Softhaus is a whimsical ice cream bar that’s hard to miss. Though only takeaways are available, they’re working on a sit-in concept that’ll allow all Singaporeans to sit back and enjoy their cup of happiness once the pandemic cases dwindle.

From today to 22 October 2021, the Singapore Armed Forces Military Working Dog Unit (SAF MWDU) will be putting up 13 veteran military working dogs for adoption.

These dogs have dedicated their lives to serving the Singapore Police Force, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) K-9 unit, and the SAF MWDU, and are looking to spend their golden years in a loving home.

All the dogs have gone through basic obedience training, regular health checks by in-house vets, annual vaccinations, and a routine heartworm and parasite prevention programme. Four of them are also HDB-approved. So if you’re interested in finding a new companion, read on.

Zeus is definitely a chonker, but he promises to love you more than food. Equipped with a jolly nature, this boi has mastered the art of giving irresistible puppy eyes to get what he wants. He absolutely loves pats and cuddles, and is not shy to nudge you for attention. Obedient and friendly, he’s ready to always be part of your world.

Igi

Igi is a handsome boi that’s proud, haughty, and sometimes, aloof. He is a lone wolf that is independent and strong, but will love you to death. Though he is perfectly fine on his own, don’t forget to shower him with attention or take him for a walk around the neighbourhood. He enjoys rolling around on grass all day long too, a classic doggo that’s sure to bring you lots of joy.

Adoption and details

These doggos are more than adorable, but hoomans should only bring them home if they’re prepared for the commitment and have enough space. The dogs have dedicated their lives to the force and should spend their remaining years in a loving family and experience life outside the military.

The MWDU will continue to take full care of any retired dogs that are not adopted, but we think that these fluffers deserve a good home.
