Recruits, fall in!
I’m sure many guys will find this command very familiar. Well, for those of you who have not been to or have yet to experience what NS life is like, now’s your chance to experience all of it for a day at Singapore Discovery Centre!

Taking place from now till 23 June 2024, the BMT @ SDC experience lets you put your survival skills to the test, or even relive your best memories from your army days like building your own basha tent, camo face painting, donning the uniform, route march (trail), conquering the Standard Obstacle Course and more!

Ask any guy who has gone through BMT what their most dreaded part about the whole experience is and they’ll likely tell you it’s the route march. So, of course you can expect to take part in one here — well, sort of.

The adventure trail is titled Armoured Artisans & Exercise Bootprint where you’ll get to learn, explore and embrace the challenges of what it takes to be a soldier. And yes, there is a lot of walking involved, kinda like going for your NS route march but much shorter and a little more fun, so the young ones will be able to complete it too.

To keep you and the little ones engaged during the trail, you’ll be handed a mission card with puzzles to complete. The answers and clues can be found within the exhibits so make sure you keep your eyes peeled throughout the course.

As you explore the exhibits, you’ll even get the chance to take part in simple activities like recording your own news broadcast, or even taking on the role as commander-in-chief in a role-playing game.

At the end of the trail, you’ll get to redeem free Singapaw patches. These are special iron-on patches resembling the formation patches that uniform personnel don on their uniforms.

That’s not all, as you can even stop by the craft station and build your own battle tank! If only my route march was this exciting and rewarding, maybe then I would have enjoyed it a lot more.

Probably another notable memory for most NSMen is conquering the Standard Obstacle Course. Since SOC is seen as a rite of passage for most recruits in BMT, of course you have to give the Survival Obstacle Course here at BMT @ SDC a go!

While this obstacle course is a giant inflatable course, it is still just as challenging. This course will send you crawling, jumping, climbing and more. All I can say is, your physical strength will be tested here, so good luck.

The course is suitable for both kids and adults, and children below the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. If you’re planning to take on the SOC, please remember to be mindful of others when you are conquering the challenge.

For all you marksmen out there, now’s your chance to prove it at the Own Time, Own Target, Fire! Foam Blaster Challenge. Does the name of this challenge sound familiar?

Here, you’ll get the chance to try your hand at firing shots at different targets, some of which are super tiny, and others will be moving. Time to put your Call of Duty and Counter Strike prowess to the test.

After all the fun outdoors, it’s time to cool down indoors and what better way to do that than to enjoy a free movie screening! The films are all centred around national defence and are produced by the students from Temasek Polytechnic. Pro tip: have some tissues on hand as these films are quite the tear-jerker.

If you’ve ever wondered where our finest officer cadets get their training, now’s your chance to hop on a free tour of SAFTI MI. The bus tour will take you through the training grounds of the officers-to-be and offers a unique glimpse of what it’s like for these young cadets (or could have been like for those who didn’t make the cut, like me.)

Singapore Discovery Centre also has plenty of photo spots within the exhibition area as well as around the lobby. There’s even a dedicated photo spot complete with an army tank in the backdrop for you to snap cool pics at. Uniforms are also available for kids to dress up as army recruits for the day!

Honestly, it was quite nice to take a little walk down memory lane to reminisce about my NS days, while also exploring the fun and interactive exhibits SDC has to offer. And for those who are wondering, yes the BMT @ SDC is absolutely free and it is great for those who want to get a fun little taste of what NS is all about.

BMT @ SDC is taking place now until 23 June and is kid-friendly, so if you’re looking for something to keep your little ones entertained during the school holidays, you know where to go! More details can be found here.
