This Japanese chain needs no introduction. One of our favourite conveyor belt restaurants, has recently unveiled their limited-time only Genki Sushi Wagyu Matsuri menu — and we’re here to let you know if it’s worth trying.
From 8 June to 23 July 2023, you’ll find some extra bougie items on their (already pretty extensive) menu. Genki lives up to their name of being one of the most value-for-money contemporary Japanese chains in Singapore, especially with their introduction of Japanese and Australian wagyu at affordable prices.
First up, we had the Australian wagyu series, starting with the Sukiyaki Wagyu (S$4.20). It was mildly sweet and savoury, and the umami notes of the sukiyaki complemented the beefiness of the meat well. While I felt like the beef was a little sinewy, it still made for a pretty good mouthfeel.
On the other hand, my dining partner preferred the Wagyu with Yuzu Kosho (S$4.20), which featured a thin slice of beef topped with tangy yuzu chilli pepper. The flavours in this particular sushi packed a punch, and reminded me of the kind of kick you get from raw garlic. It’s defo not for the faint of heart, but you’ll want to try this one if you like strong flavours!
The Wagyu Maki (S$9.90) comprised a trinity of tender wagyu, cucumber, and tamago. It actually comes with two different toppings — one with a slightly sweet and spicy sauce, and the other with deep fried shallots, which provided a nice crunch.
For those of you with larger appetites (like me), go for the Wagyu Mini Don (S$9.90). You’ll find succulent slices of Australian wagyu, shimeji mushrooms, caramelised onions and spring onions atop a bed of rice. I particularly enjoyed this dish, because it also came with more sauce than the other dishes, which added to the “umaminess” of the don.
Other than the Australian Wagyu, we also got to try the A5 Satsuma wagyu from Kagoshima, Japan, that was infused with Italian truffle oil — think Mega Truffle Wagyu (S$7.90), Wagyu Tsutsumi (S$5.90), and Spicy Wagyu Tsutsumi (S$5.90).
The beef was nicely marbled and juicy, and I liked that the truffle oil complemented the wagyu without overpowering it. Plus, I found that the wagyu from the Japanese series was more tender than that of the Australian variety.
While the Mega Truffle Wagyu really hit the spot with the generous portions of beef, I would have preferred the Spicy Wagyu Tsutsumi to have been a little… well, spicier. As someone who can’t really take heat, I’d have to say that those who love spice might not find this dish the most appealing.
For dessert, check out their Yuzu Sorbet (S$4.80) and Lemon Mont Blanc (S$5.80). IMO, these citrusy palate cleansers were perfect after all that beef!
Overall, if you’re looking for some fuss-free quality wagyu, I’d still recommend heading over to Genki Sushi while it’s available — plus, for the price, it’s still pretty affordable.
