For the unfamiliar, Shiba Inus are a breed of hunting dog from Japan known for being good-natured, smart, and most importantly, absolutely adorable.

These furbabies roam freely around the cafe, so you can pet them, pick them up, and play with them any time.

If you want to feed the pups, you can also purchase dog treats from the cafe for S$0.63 (RM2). And an additional tip: the treats are also great as bait for helping to capture that perfect shot with the dogs!

Entry to the cafe is S$3.14 (RM10) for an hour-long session and includes free soft drinks. The cafe also serves food such as Popcorn Chicken, Japanese Curry Rice, and more.

Cafe owner Desmond Ong opened the place to give his six dogs more space to run around after a neighbour complained about them barking. Right now, the cafe occupies the second floor of a shophouse, and there are plans to convert the third floor into a pet hotel. The space also offers dog grooming services, and puppies for sale.

Shi-Ba Cafe is Malaysia’s first Shiba Inu cafe, and is conveniently located in Mount Austin, about a half-hour drive from the causeway. If you’re thinking of taking a trip to Johor Bahru soon, be sure to drop by and say hi to the dogs there!

Editor’s Note:

We enjoy animal-related establishments as it gives us the opportunity to interact with our favourite animals – and as animal lovers, we can’t ignore the ethical issues that revolve around this. From animal cafes to pet shops and catteries, there are a wide range of ethical concerns when it comes to animal welfare such as the treatment of the animals, or ethical breeding at pet shops and catteries.

As we share some really great animal cafes, pet shops and catteries to visit, we strongly urge everyone to treat these animals gently, and if you have seen signs that the animals are not being well taken care of, please highlight it to us immediately. If you are considering getting a pet, we would also encourage you to consider adoption options first if possible. There are plenty of lovable animals waiting for a good home at places like SoSD, Cat Welfare Society, and the SPCA!
