Skim Alley is a newly-opened skimboarding park, the first and only in Singapore

Surfing is one of those fun sports that we don’t really get the chance to try in Singapore unless we hop on a plane to another country with deeper waves. But there’s one little-known boardsport that our waters are great for, and that’s skimboarding. It’s similar to surfing, except with a board that’s smaller and has no fins — and now’s the perfect time to try it, with the opening of Skim Alley, Singapore’s first and only skimboarding park.

Located in Heritage Chalet along Pasir Ris Beach, the skimboarding park is a great place to try out the sport for the first time. Skimboards and aqua shoes are both provided, so you’ll just need to arrive in the appropriate attire (a comfortable shirt, and shorts or tights made of synthetic material) 15 minutes before your session starts.

First-timers will need to book a session with an instructor (S$40), who will show you the proper technique for hopping onto the board while on land, before you enter the 35m-long shallow pool. It might take a few tries before you successfully manage to skim across the water, so be sure to bring along a change of clothes!

(Note that the place has a shower area, but you’ll have to bring along your own towel and soap.)

The skimboarding park focuses more on the flatland aspect of the sport, which includes performing tricks derived from skateboarding such as ollies. If you have skateboarding experience, or if you feel confident enough on the board, maybe try out a couple of simple tricks too! (Of course, do be safe and attempt tricks only if you’re comfortable. We wouldn’t want anyone getting hurt!)

For subsequent visits, if you don’t need the guidance, you can opt for a regular 60-minute session without an instructor (S$28) instead.

With Singapore’s hot weather, this definitely sounds like the perfect new sport to try out!
