Taiwanese food has been booming recently in Singapore. Only two months ago (July 2023) did we welcome TaiWan Night Markets at Cineleisure Orchard, not to mention the popular Taiwanese onigiri chain in Hillion Mall, and also a Taiwanese bakery in Bugis.

In order to keep up with the times, the team behind Feng Food in Northpoint City has opened up a new Taiwanese restaurant at South Bridge Road, just a stone’s throw away from Maxwell Food Centre.

Ah Zhong Mian Xian 阿中麵線 is helmed by a Taiwanese chef who had prior experience at the famous Ay Chung Rice Noodles 阿宗麵線 in Ximending! Although, both restaurants are unrelated to each other despite the similar names.

The metallic benches, wooden chairs and faux marble tables will remind you of the organic street stalls lining the streets of Taipei and family-style Taiwanese eateries. But rather than its interior, you’ll find yourself focusing on the food, which has garnered quite the attention for its authentic renditions of Taiwanese food and snacks.

No doubt the first to try on the menu is the Signature Mee Sua ($8.80), laden with braised pork intestines and served with a side of vinegar and spicy chilli. The pork intestines are chewy and flavourful without any unpleasant fishy odour. There’s also a Combo Mee Sua (S$13.20) that includes prawns, meat and the braised intestines for you to try a little bit of everything!

For those who are not a fan of innards, check out the Fried Rice with Specially Marinated Pork Chop (S$12.30) — the juicy pork chops and savoury marinate sauce pair especially well with the fragrant fried rice.

Other chef specialties that will have you gulping down the whole bowl within minutes are Signature Taiwanese Braised Beef Noodles ($12.20), Sunrise Braised Meat Rice ($10.10), and Moon Shape Prawn Cake ($12.40).

Some of their dishes including the Moon Shape Prawn Cake and Sunrise Crispy Chicken Cutlet Rice (S$13.20) are available in limited quantities each day, but the extensive menu of rice, noodles, vegetables, Taiwanese snacks, beverages and more will make sure you can always get to feast on something delicious!

You can get your rush of sugar (and nostalgia) with beverages that come in old-school tall glasses that are rarely seen nowadays. Of course, you have to go for the quintessentially Taiwanese Brown Sugar Caramel Pearl Milk Tea (S$3.90), or the Black Sugar Winter Melon (S$3) and healthier Roselle Tea.

Considering its convenient location near Chinatown MRT and Maxwell MRT, this restaurant serving authentic Taiwanese food for S$14 and below is not only friendly for your wallet, but also a great hang out spot with your dinner date.

Satisfy your Taiwanese food cravings with a meal at Ah Zhong Mian Xian!
