Feast on Daegu-style fried chicken, Garlic Cheese Sriracha Corn Fritters, and more at this popular Korean restaurant in Orchard

by Cheryl Lim

It’s been a long while since I’ve returned from Korea but I still get unexplainable bouts of cravings for Korean soul food. Well, not to fret (at least for me), Doran Chicken has got my back.

They have just recently opened their first branch in Orchard after a 12-year-long run in Korea. Their name is a cute play on the Korean term “Doran Doran”, referring to the act of friendly conversations — so why not bring your friends or family down to chit-chat and lepak?

The owner must also be confident because the space boasts an open-concept kitchen, which means that you can see how your food is being prepared right in front of you.

If you are a fan of Korean food, you will long know that Daegu is the mecca of fried chicken and many say that Daegu-style chicken is one of the best in the world (me included).

For those who aren’t in the know, Daegu is also the birthplace of many chicken franchises including Doran Chicken, which also coincidentally specialise in Daegu-style fried chicken – notably known to be more traditional and spicy.

I also heard from a little birdie that their chicken is marinated seven days before frying which gives it a complex flavour profile. Additionally, they also individually brush each piece of chicken which sounds like guaranteed goodness.

For their sauce, they blend traditional and modern flavours together, with the secret being their traditional Korean earthenware, also better known as ‘onggi’. (I bet that even if I use an onggi to store my sauce, it still wouldn’t taste half as nice as theirs.)

Oh, and if you’re like me and can’t do without carbohydrates, they also offer options, such as Tuna Rice Ball (S$9.80), Sincheon Tteokbokki (S$12.80), Garlic Cheese Sriracha Corn Fritters (S$9.80), and more!

One dish that stood out to me in particular is their Flat Dumplings with Sweet & Spicy Squid Salad (S$17.80). As its name suggests, the dumplings are flat, filled with chives and glass noodles.

Moreover, you eat it like a wrap, with the squid salad that is placed separately on the dish. I would say this makes for a pretty interesting experience horh?

So, if you’re craving for a taste of Daegu, why not head down to Doran Chicken for dinner this weekend?
