Singaporeans love Korean food, you can see long queues outside many Korean restaurants selling food as diverse as army stew, KBBQ, to jjangmyeon. Anything to feel closer to our Korean idols right?

But Korean food isn’t the cheapest either. Most of the cheaper choices normally involve Korean Fried Chicken, but what if you’re not a fan of KFC? Well, then you have to check out Kim Dae Mun, an authentic hidden gem that serves up homely and affordable Korean food for below S$10.

If you’ve walked from Dhoby Ghaut to Somerset, you’d have probably noticed a nondescript hole-in-the-wall eatery serving Korean food that’s pretty popular. Yeah, that’s Kim Dae Mun.

And as we all know, it’s this kind of hole-in-the-wall establishments that serve up the heartiest and most authentic dishes. Comforting lunch for under S$10 in Orchard that’s not a mall food court? That’s hard to find.

One of their most popular items has to be the piping hot bowls of Kimchi Soup (Pork) (S$8.50) — steamy cauldrons of vibrant red-hued soup that’re densely crowded with a medley of juicy pork, egg, kimchi and bouncy tofu. A comforting lunch option for the upcoming rainy season.

If you’re on a tight budget, you can go for their crunchy Garlic Chives Pancakes (S$4.50), one of the most affordable items on Kim Dae Mun’s menu. A simple but hearty dish that’s loaded with leeks and garlic for some sharp and punchy fragrance,

Or if you need something that can fill you up, there are also rice options such as the Bibimpap that only costs S$8.50. Or you can get a sizeable piece of Fried Saba (S$8.50) that comes with a satisfying crisp on the skin and juicy insides.

Spicy Pork (S$9) is another affordable and meatier choice for those that can’t have a meal without carbs, jumbled with some kimchi to cut through the heaviness. Or if you’re partial to chicken, there’s also a Spicy Shredded Chicken (S$8.50) option available.

Sure, Kim Dae Mun doesn’t have the modern glitz of many popular places in town but if you’re looking for no-frills and affordable Korean food, then this should be on your list.
