Located along Haji Lane, Waroeng Anak Indo is just a short walk from Bugis MRT. It can be easy to miss it, but you’ll know you’re near when you spot Solace Airlines photobooth, The Halal Corner, or Vintagewknd. The two-storey space stands out with its wood-toned exterior and wooden signboard. Inside, vintage Indonesian pop posters, retro furniture, and a mural of a pakcik (uncle in Bahasa Melayu) by the roadside set the scene.

If the first floor is crowded, head upstairs to the second floor, an 80s-inspired time capsule. Grab a seat anywhere and place your order at the counter downstairs.

Since its launch in 2024, the menu has gone through multiple revisions and changes, with some items being rarer than usual. In our case, we were lucky to try the Nasi Goreng Ayam Penyet Sambal Ijo (S$15), Tahu Sumedang (S$8), and a classic glass of Teh Ais Manis (S$3.85).

Starting with the mains, the Nasi Goreng Ayam Penyet Sambal Ijo features brightly coloured kerupuk (crackers in Bahasa Indonesia), homemade green chilli paste, fried chicken, tempe (fried fermented beans), fried tofu, and a fried chicken thigh.

The fried rice is spicy by itself, while the green chilli paste neutralises the spice with its sourness. Feeling adventurous, we added Sambal Merah (S$1) to test, which was spicier (obviously, the red chilli paste!). Dipping the crackers into the sambal was truly addictive.

Although the fried chicken appeared tough, it was soft and tender, easily shredding from the bones. Each bite transported us back to the roadside warungs, especially since the spiciness was comparable to the standard Indonesian cuisine. 

Not a fan of spice? Opt for the Nasi Ayam Penyet (S$12), served with white rice instead of fried rice. Alternatively, the Mi Sedap Anak Indo (S$13) and Bakso Komplit (S$13) are much safer alternatives if you prefer noodles instead. 

Moving on to the sides, we were lucky to get the last plate of Tahu Sumedang (S$8 for 4pcs) while the Tempe Mendoan (S$8 for 6pcs) was unavailable during our visit. First thing we noticed was how crisp it appeared—when we took our first bite, we were excited by the contrasting texture—crispy on the outside, soft and comforting on the inside.

Dipping it in the Sambal Merah gave a similar addictive feeling to the crackers we had previously. Safe to say, we devoured the Tahu Sumedang quickly and understood why it was easily sold out even before dinnertime. 

Our verdict? Although the restaurant launched in 2024 and had a change in management, the essence of the eatery remains the same. From the nostalgic interior to the comforting, familiar foods, we would definitely visit Waroeng Anak Indo again when we get the chance.

Go give it a try, especially since the restaurant is a walk away from Gemilang Kampong Gelam Ramadan Bazaar.

If you thought this thrifting hotspot couldn’t surprise you any further, think again. 

Introducing Takara House, a new Haji Lane vintage store located in a second-floor shophouse unit. 

Before you moan and groan about yet another thrift store, hear me out! As hinted in its name, Takara House is a treasure trove of unique secondhand pieces.

Clothing items such as shirts, vests, and leather jackets are available at prices ranging from S$30 to S$80.

Like most thrift stores, you can bedazzle yourself with some bling, including vintage handbags, earrings (from S$15, buy two get one free), brooches, belts, and rings (from S$12).

We haven’t lost the ancient texts just yet! This time capsule of a vintage store freezes moments of the past through trinkets and toys as well. 

You’ll become a kid in a candy store as you dive into Pokémon cards (five for S$1), Happy Meal toys, dinnerware, action figures, and more.

After all that digging, you deserve a treat. Thankfully, Takara House serves bites and brews from M.patisserie, a French and Japanese patisserie operating in a tiny kitchen area behind the store’s counter.

You can dine in a space with low stools and coffee tables by windows that offer the perfect lighting. 

I must mention, though, that seating is limited, so try to swing by during non-peak days to avoid squeezing within the small space.

The menu rotates, but you can usually expect artisanal tarts, sliced cakes, madeleines, financiers, and more.

We stopped by to sample their offerings. Let’s just say that no matter what you pick, you’re in safe hands.

Of the many desserts, we got the Creme Brulee Tart (S$13) and the Matcha Pistachio Shortcake (S$15).

Between the two, my vote has to go to the Creme Brulee Tart. 

It gets the Asian compliment of being not too sweet. The contrast between the smooth custard and the crisp, brittle caramel was just right too.

The Matcha Pistachio Shortcake was also delightful, with a hefty dollop of cream atop soft cake. I personally found the matcha taste stronger than the nutty pistachio, so it’s perfect for any matcha fiend out there.

Drinks are just as delicious if you’re willing to break the bank. The hot weather called for the cold quenchers, so we chose the refreshing Citrus Blossom Tea (S$6) and Yuzu Manuka Honey (S$5.80).

Whether you’re there for a quiet tea break or for some thrift treasure hunting, Takara House is certainly a gem you don’t want to miss the next time you’re at Haji Lane.

Escape from the hustle and bustle with self-help reads like Haemin Sunim’s The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down or a visual feast in Wes Anderson’s Accidentally. 

These books accompanied with the soft lit, cosy ambience and soothing tunes sounds like the perfect way to spend a self-care day, no?

Price-wise, I’d say that it’s extremely value-for-money since everything that you would need is already provided for.

We are about 42 days away from mother Taylor Swift gracing our shores. If that isn’t exciting enough, there’s yet another Taylor Swift self-photobooth for you to help you get all excited for the concert. 

Popular self-photo studio, Pixie Loft, has released a Taylor Swift Eras-themed photobooth, complete with special Taylor-photostrips, props and even merch for you to stock up on all things Tay Tay related. 

The Pixie Loft Taylor Swift pop-up currently only features three eras — Speak Now, 1989, and Lover — but maybe if more people put in a special request, they might just include more (fingers crossed). And in case you’re wondering, yes these are all from Taylor’s Version. 

Along with the three themed photo walls, there are also special props for you to pose with like microphones, heart-shaped glasses and cowboy hats (because mother first started out as a country singer, duh) 

I can see you having a ball of a time over at the 1989 photo wall. The blue wall is decorated with birds, paper planes, and blank spaces for you to write your name (not literally of course). The open concept might be a little awkward at first, but all you gotta do is be confident and shake shake shake off all the nerves. 

Channel your inner Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince over at the Lover wall. Or you can be The Archer with some angel wings, bow and arrow. Before you get overly excited, you need to calm down because there’s still one more wall to pose with. 

The Speak Now wall calls for the most dramatic and enchanting pose. Bonus points if you come dressed in a dramatic outfit or in purple to recreate the vibes of the album cover!  

Would’ve, could’ve, should’ve taken more photos but each session is limited to just one hour. But you’ll get to snap unlimited shots and choose your best shots to be printed on the three Taylor-inspired photostrips. Prices are also really affordable at just S$10 each session! 

Apart from snapping pics, there’s also a section of Taylor Swift merch ranging from tote bags to keychains, plushies and even stickers. The collection of merch is  brought in by blindgoldrush. 

Trust me when I say that you’ll be spoiled for choice just deciding which keychain to get because they’re all so pretty! Just look at the Eras Tour inspired keychain — how can anyone resist that?

So when the folks behind House of Oracles (remember those S$5 oracle readings?) shared with us about what’s new with them, we decided to head down and simultaneously check out their revamped space as well!

Located along Haji Lane, House of Oracles shares an entrance with Bored Go Here and occupies the attic space. But don’t worry it’s not some scary attic, the space has been transformed into this super chill place that is the perfect setting for tarot readings. 

Look at this, aren’t the vibes just immaculate with this one? Compared to the hustle and bustle of a Friday night (the day it was when we visited), this setting was exactly what we needed to gain some tranquillity away from the crowds.

House of Oracles is most popular for their Guided Message from the Universe one-card reading (S$5), but they also have three-card healing readings (S$30 for 15 minutes), and even three-card chakra readings (S$30 for 15 minutes). 

I went for the guidance and general message reading and not gonna lie the idea of being vulnerable in front of a stranger made me nervous. It was my first time getting read by someone whom I’ve just met after all. 

Luckily, the cosy and ethereal vibes of the revamped place really helped to ease my nerves and set the mood, before I was being led through a guided general spiritual reading.

For the reading, you’ll be required to give your name and birthday (the usual) for starters. Then, just sit back and be ready to receive the messages from the cards — a very simple process. 

But what I did not expect was to get called out right away with just the very first card. If there’s anything you must know is that you’ll not be able to hide any facet of your true self here — just look at me. 

I was told that I needed to get some physical activity and exercise in order to manage my stagnant energy. That did not sit well with the lazy couch potato me. Guess my new year’s resolution for 2024 is gonna be to lead a healthier lifestyle. 

I will spare you the boring details but overall I was told to be more honest with myself and to gain a little more confidence in my abilities — a piece of advice that I think everyone should have! 

Tarot readings are largely tailored to an individual, so if you wanna get more in-depth advice, you should definitely book a slot to meet with these guys. But if it resonates with you, then there definitely isn’t any harm in following that advice. 

For all parents of furry ones, you may rejoice to learn that House of Oracles does readings for pets too. If you’ve always wanted to know what your furkid is thinking, this is just the thing for you.

If you are interested in bringing your furkids for a reading but don’t know what to ask, start by asking Yes or No questions. 

When we were doing the pet reading, some of the guidance we received was really insightful to understanding our pets better. For instance, my coworker learnt that her habit of working at home has led to her cat feeling neglected, and we also found out that her cat wasn’t a fan of vegetables (just like his owner)! 

In essence, the pet reading allowed us to communicate better with our furry ones and understand them on a deeper level. 

House of Oracles also offers ten-minute three-card couple readings (S$25) that highlight present issues to you and your partner, allowing you to gain more clarity on how to work together moving forward.

We’ve got the trendy top-down 0.5 wide angle studios by PIC UP! and One Click Studio; a vintage photobooth, and now, a self-photo studio with six different themes for you to choose from!

Sessions at Pixie Loft are very affordable — it only costs S$10 for each person to use the studio for an hour, and it even includes a customisable photo strip for each person. You can even get it all for S$8 if you come with four others or more!

How does it all work then? First, take your pick of props from the shelves. There’ll be a fun assortment of toy guns, glasses, wigs and more to choose from. 

Then, choose a booth with your favourite theme. The six booths differ wildly in their themes, ranging from cute aesthetics to “edgy criminal” vibes.

Going for a chill, pastel summer vibe? Try out the first booth, which also happens to be the largest, with rainbows, fluffy clouds and neon lighting for you to pose against.

Become Alice at the Wonderland-inspired booth, featuring chessboard tiles, enchanting roses and a fantastical peek into the world of giant mushrooms through the keyhole behind you.

The fourth booth pulls you back into reality with its nightclub vibes. Show off your best moves on the floor framed by large disco balls and a reflective metallic background. Hot tip: set the ring light to flicker and you can recreate the strobe lights at a nightclub!

Right beside the nightclub booth is a “toilet” with exposed bricks and graffiti that you would find in a dangerous, ulu corner of Singapore. You can even leave your own mark on the graffiti wall (not in the unsanitary kind of way, please!)

A ring light and phone stands are provided at every booth for the best lighting and angle for your photos. Play around with the ring light for more colourful lighting and retake as many photos as you want within the designated time frame. 

At the end of your session, just select your favourite photos to print onto your photo strip, and you can keep the rest of the photos you have on your phones for free. If you would like to print out more photos, just add on S$2 for each strip.

Looking for a vintage corset? re:drmg might have just the thing you’re looking for.

Probably the largest vintage and reworked clothing store in Singapore, Vintage Wknd specialises in original and reworked vintage pieces so you best bet you can find items from the 50s to the Y2K era here. The items here also have a one-of-a-kind factor — that’s right, no two pieces are alike here as most of them have been reworked from discarded materials. 

The clothes you’ll find are more brightly coloured and cutesy which will add a pop of colour to your everyday style. They’ve also got a pretty extensive collection of original pieces and reworked items in store so don’t be surprised if you find yourself leaving with more items than you came here for.

3. Superwasted

Superwasted is helmed by the same owners behind Vintage Wknd, you can expect to find unique upcycled and vintage pieces worth adding to your wardrobe. Like their sister brand, most of the pieces here have been creatively reworked into items like crop tops, shirts, jackets, and dresses. 

What sets them apart from Vintage Wknd is their style, which is more rugged and edgy. Their online store also has a mystery shopping option in which the store will surprise you with something off their racks — doesn’t it sound exciting? Prices here will also set you back upwards of S$35.

4. Woofie’s Warehouse 

You might have seen this TikTok famous thrift store on your social media feeds. What makes these guys special is the curated selection of trendy Y2K fashion for just S$10 — super pocket-friendly! Woofie’s Warehouse joined the thrifting scene in April 2023 and their physical store is overflowing with Y2K vibes with their vintage-inspired items and retro memorabilia. 

The racks are filled with Y2K-inspired items as well as other styles including vintage graphic tees, denim jeans and skirts, cargo pants, hoodies, workwear and more. You’ll even be able to find leather loafers in pristine condition going for just a fraction of its original price here — what a steal! Apart from vintage items, you can also find brands like Adidas, Nike, Champion, Reebok, Umbro and even Dickies here too — all pre-loved, of course. And yes, everything is just S$10 so why not?

5. Flame Vintage 

Calling all retro-enthusiasts! Here’s a really lit (pun intended) vintage store you defo have to check out — Flame Vintage. Remember back in the day when punk-rock graphic tees were a thing? You’ll be pleased to know that the racks here are stocked full with graphic tees that will certainly make heads turn. 

If rock isn’t your thing, Flame also has a selection of retro-style jackets, vests and more from labels like Nike, and Ralph Lauren among others. I personally really love their wide selection of windbreakers which go for just S$20 to S$30. There’s also a S$10 section that is filled with hidden gems, although you’ll need to put in a bit of effort to rummage through the bin.

6. The Cartel’s 

One of my personal favourite spots to thrift a good graphic tee is The Cartel’s because they have probably the widest selection of graphic tees around. What’s even greater about the shop is they have racks of clothes starting from just S$5 — try saying no to that! 

Apart from their exhaustive collection of graphic tees, they’ve also got a pretty large selection of NFL jerseys and even shoes — yes, you can find some vintage sneakers like Nike Jordans here. If you don’t know what to get, you can go for the three-piece mystery pack which will certainly be a sweet surprise.

7. Fibres Friction 

If you find yourself wandering along the streets of Haji Lane in the mood to shop for some vintage clothes, you definitely have to check out Fibres Friction. Formerly known as Thriftanic, the store is lined with racks of neatly colour-coded vintage shirts. 

You can expect to find racks filled with clothes from some of our favourite streetwear brands like Carhartt, Dickie, Wrangler, and more, which helps to keep you focused if you’re looking to shop for a specific brand. There’s also a S$10 cap bin if you’re looking to score some nice trucker caps. 

The next time you plan a shopping spree with your besties, make sure to add these thrift stores to your list. Who knows — you’ll be surprised at the hidden gems you might uncover!

Jamal Kazura Aromatics at Kampong Glam is a fragrance store that has been going viral on TikTok for their affordable, long lasting and unique perfumes, colognes, essential oils and more. 

As you step into the store, you’ll be greeted by rows upon rows of gorgeous perfume bottles lining the shelves, as well as a huge selection of different scents. The place looks almost straight out of a fairytale — like something that you would see in the story of Aladdin.
