Remember the popular retro roller rink pop-up at Plaza Singapura?  Well, Rollermania is back and this time they’ve got a bigger venue with more flashy disco lights, funky music and more! 

Rollermania 4.0 is located at The Xperience at CQ @ Clarke Quay returns with some major upgrades, starting with a fresh new ‘concrete jungle’ theme. That’s right, the rink has been transformed into an enchanting magical forest, adorned with mystical plants and sparkling fairy lights. 

This time, the space is also much bigger, spanning over 4,000 sq ft, which gives you more space to skate around. Rollermania 4.0 is also fully air conditioned — very important especially since you’ll be working up a sweat skating around. You’ll finally be able to skate around more comfortably. 

Scattered all around the rink are picturesque photo spots decorated with neon lights and leafy overhanging fauna. Remember to bring along your digital camera to capture some vibey 90’s-style pictures while you skate around. 

But of course, you don’t have to be a pro skater to enjoy your time at Rollermania 4.0. In fact, some might say that it’s even more fun going with friends who don’t know how to skate. 

If you belong to the group that cannot skate at all, you’ll be pleased to know that there are handy skate assists available for you to use so you don’t miss out on all the fun. 

There’s even skating classes available for those who are interested in mastering the art of roller skating. The Rapid Skater Course is a simple 15-minute crash course designed to help you have a wheeling good time for just S$15. 

The New Skater’s Course (S$200 for four lessons) is perfect for beginners who wanna improve on their technique, learn new moves and gain the confidence to skate in style. Those looking to go pro can go for the Pro Skater’s Course (S$360 for eight lessons). 

Ticket prices to Rollermania 4.0 start from S$28 for an off-peak single ticket and S$112 for four during peak hours — the latter is perfect for those planning to go with friends. Prices include equipment rental, but you’re also free to bring your own skates too.

Rollermania 4.0 is also offering 60-day passes from S$95 (off-peak period) and S$99 (peak period) — perfect for those who just can’t get enough of roller skating. More details can be found here.

If you spot a camera that you like, feel free to snap a few pictures to test out the quality of the photos or the vibe that it gives off. You can even request for a card reader to view the photos on your phone. 

Rest assured that each camera is carefully curated to ensure the best quality and IG-worthy photos. 

Every camera comes with a 14-day warranty and includes a memory card, battery and charger. 

Price-wise, I’d say that it’s extremely value-for-money since everything that you would need is already provided for.

If I’m being honest, making dinner plans at kopitiam isn’t the first thing that comes to mind and I’m beginning to wonder why. Nothing beats old-school fare as it brings back so many childhood memories and the taste of nostalgia that can’t be recreated elsewhere. 

If you can relate, you might want to try out Great Nanyang, which will be opening their second outlet at Somerset on 31 March 2024 (some of you might already have visited their Tanjong Pagar outlet). 

This is a sign to make those lunch plans that you’ve been putting off with your friends.

The minute we arrived, it was like stepping into a time capsule back to old Malaysia and Singapore in the 1990s. 

It was completely decked out in retro decor including old magazines, old-school flyers and posters, and vintage clocks. 

Even though I’ve never been in an old-school telephone booth before, it was pretty surreal to witness it for myself, especially in today’s modern world where smartphones rule the world — plus it makes for a good photo for the ‘gram.

My eyes were also drawn to the feature wall boasting towering rows of old Khong Guan Biscuit tins. See if you can spot your favourite snack (mine are the gem biscuits of course).

I couldn’t wait to tuck into the spread  — it certainly was a blast from the past and reminded me of going to my grandma’s house for home-cooked food after school.

We started off with the Curry Chicken Chee Cheong Fun (S$9.90) which features steamed rice rolls and fragrant curry chicken. 

This was my favourite as the curry was creamy with a tinge of spice and had an interesting interplay of textures. Think chewy noodles with crunchy beancurd skin and soft green beans — this would be great for people who don’t have the biggest spice tolerance but still want a taste of local food.

However, if you aren’t too hungry, the Curry Chicken Toast (S$7.90) makes for a great midday snack as well. It uses the same thick and rich curry as the previous dish but comes with slices of toasted baguette instead. 

The star of this dish was definitely the fall-off-the-bone tender chicken that had a well-balanced seasoning.

Planning to visit Great Nanyang with friends or family?

Get the hearty Claypot Mee Tai Mak (S$9.90) to share which has mee tai mak, prawns and a luscious egg yolk just waiting to be mixed in. 

I went in thinking that the gravy would taste more umami since it was cooked with a savoury black sauce but it was lighter than expected. Nevertheless, it still made for a pretty comforting dish (especially since it was raining when we visited)!

What I didn’t expect to enjoy so much was the Penang Asam Laksa (S$8.90), tart and spicy broth flavoured with fish and fermented prawn paste. 

Even though it’s such a simple dish, the sourness from the broth alongside the freshness from the cucumber and mint and spicy chilli padi made for a great combination of flavours. 

Remember when we would get the old-school white bread from traditional bakeries to enjoy for breakfast the next day?

Well, Great Nanyang has it here in the form of the Milo Toast (S$4), inspired by the iconic drink that we all grew up drinking. I would say that it makes for a sweet treat rather than breakfast as it’s generously served with Milo powder and condensed milk.

Speaking of which, my highlight of the day was the overflowing Sai Ka Hor (S$3 for hot, S$5 for cold) comprising a blend of milo and tea. Although the tea flavour wasn’t very strong, I just loved how chocolatey and malty this drink was.

Besides that, they also have a Soy Milk Coffee (S$5.90). Since the coffee is served on the side, you can control how heavy or bitter you’d want your drink to be!

For a refreshing end to the meal, help yourself to an icy popsicle (S$3) with unique local flavours like Ribena, sour plum, kopi-O, hor ka sai (coffee and milo), milo, and mango. As we already had a heavy meal, I went with the sour plum which was super tangy and refreshing.

P.S. they’re offering an opening promotion for up to 50% off the popsicles from 5 to 7 April 2024!

To take the old-school theme up a notch, Great Nanyang has an interesting cash system where you can simply place your money in a Milo tin that’s suspended on a pulley at the popsicle stand. 

Overall, I would say that the affordable local fare and retro interior decor is worth paying a visit for. Aside from the Penang laksa and soymilk, the rest of the items that we tried are exclusively available at the Somerset outlet!

Well, here’s a shop that you should check out if you’ve been thinking of getting one of your own.

Just a five-minute walk from Chinatown MRT is Digicam Depository which boasts over 400 cameras for you to browse through. 

They’re an online business that has just opened a temporary pop-up store just beside Chinatown Complex until the end of March. Prices start from S$50 for a camera, inclusive of memory cards and a charger .

What’s more, every camera is carefully curated to ensure the best quality photos and restocked daily. 

Choose from chunky classics to sleek minis from the 90s to early 2000s. 

You can also expect to find reputable brands such as Casio, Panasonic and even Fujifilm. 

Here’s what you may find if you do make your way down. 

The Sony Cybershot DSC-W800 (S$220) gives off a soft and dreamy look (perfect for those who love exploring nature parks and going to the beach). 

It’s definitely an unmatched aesthetic that you can’t get with modern day cameras nowadays. 

For those who love the vibes that warm filters give off, you might find certain cameras like the Olympus VG-160. 

It adds depth and character to your photos (and besides, it’ll save you some editing time).

You might find cameras like Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX2 (S$180) which give off a raw and unfiltered look. 

And to be honest, some of the photos do come out looking quite similar to the ones you usually take on the smartphone. 

The best part is, it comes in different shapes and colours to choose from — which make for great statement pieces. 

Go for pink if you’re into the ‘coquette’ look.  

If not, go for the blue tones for a clean and cool look. It’s a safe choice if you’re looking for vintage digital cameras to match with your outfit.

As the cameras sell out pretty fast, do head down earlier if you want first dibs and a wider selection to choose from. 

Regardless of whether you have a passion for collecting cameras, love taking photos, or are simply into the Y2K aesthetic, there are more than enough cameras to go around.

This holiday season, Plaza Singapura will transform into a rockin’ retro roller rink decked in flashy neon lights, funky music, and themed nights like  Rock N Roll Revival, Swifties Shake it Off, TikTok Top Hits and more! 

Rollermania 3.0 is Singapore’s first pop-up retro roller skating rink in Singapore, taking place from now until 1 January 2024 at Plaza Singapura. I don’t know about you but I love retro roller rinks — and it’s such a pity that there aren’t many in Singapore. 

If you’ve always wanted to experience skating in a roller rink, the chance has finally come. 

The entire car park space on level seven has been transformed into a flashy skating rink decked in vibrant neon lights with funky music from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s playing in the background — super old school vibes. 

To add to the vibes of the place, you’ll also be skating with LED light-up skates too. Of course, you should come dressed in your best retro fits just for the fun of it. Think: bell bottom jeans, lots of bright prints, head bands, leg warmers and more.

Speaking of funky music, there’s also gonna be special themed nights such as Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival, TikTok Top Hits, Seoul Soundscape Kpop Nights, and (my favourite) Swifties “Shake it Off” — you can bet that I’ll definitely be heading down for that one. 

Each session lasts for two hours, which gives you plenty of time to get the hang of skating (and maybe fall down a couple of times). But, if you’re a newbie to this, don’t worry as they have protective gear and skating assists (like a walker but with wheels) for you to use. 

There’s also plenty of cute photo spots around the rink for you to pose for pics at. You definitely must take pics at the vibrant Rollermania 3.0 neon sign because it is just so pretty! 

Keep the fun going after your skating session at TimeZone’s underground arcade fitted with games like Mario Kart Arcade DX Twin and more. There’s also other carnival games where you can win some super cute prizes. 

Tickets to Rollermania 3.0 Skate Rink costs S$20 for a single ticket and S$68 for a bundle of four tickets (perfect for going with friends or family) on Mondays to Thursdays. On peak periods (Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays), ticket prices for single tickets cost S$25 and a bundle of four costs S$85. You can get your tickets here. 

Prices include skate rental as well as protective gear, but if you’re a pro skater and prefer using your own gear, you’re free to bring your own skates too.

But instead of guns and paperwork, this store dabbles in something entirely unexpected — traditional Chinese desserts with floral infusions. And as their name suggests, these elevated desserts are brewed with rock sugar, imparting a sweetness that has greater depth and harmony with other ingredients.

When you first enter the cafe, you’ll spot nostalgic red leather tufted chairs and antiques like metallic table fans and a radio cassette player. 

Venture in deeper, and you’ll find a meeting room with a whiteboard and retro metal folding chairs. And yes, those standing fans do work.

The highlight of the cafe is hidden behind a door at the end of a narrow corridor, which opens up into an old-school office space filled with manila folders, brick mobile phones and green banker desk lamps. 

The other half of the room mimics a pantry space with shelves of classic biscuit tins filled with sweets and biscuits I haven’t seen in years, and all sorts of antique paraphernalia decorating the walls and wooden cabinets.

There’s even a private Chairman Office that can seat one, and is also furnished with those rotary dial phones and an old keyboard that looks like it should come with a Windows 98 computer. 

Diners can choose to enjoy Bing Tang Tang Shui’s signature desserts in these retro-themed spaces. The star of their menu is the Osmanthus Tang Yuan (S$12.50), featuring chewy sesame tang yuan (rice balls) atop a bed of crushed ice drizzled generously with purple goji berry syrup and rice milk sauce.

The addition of Hakka yellow wine and lemon brings out the fragrance of the rice milk sauce, while osmanthus caramel leaves a delicate floral fragrance as the finishing note of this aesthetic dessert.

Bing Tang Tang Shui’s Lavender Infused Mango Sago (S$8.80) is also a crowd favourite. Just imagine whipped cream cheese paired with fresh mango cubes, golden pearls and lavender-infused honey. It’s a deadly combination that will send me straight to dessert heaven.

The Pearl Chrysanthemum Infused Orh Nee (S$8.80) caught my eye too. Instead of shallot oil, the orh nee uses refreshing chrysanthemum oil and syrup, topped with water chestnuts, sweet potatoes and crispy fried pearl chrysanthemum buds! 

Check out their other floral-infused desserts like the Ginger Flower Honeydew & Watermelon Sago (S$8.80) and Pink Rose Cheng Teng (S$8.80). 

But if you’re not a fan of any of the flowers, there are also classic versions of the desserts that leave out the floral infusions.

Bing Tang Tang Shui offers a selection of traditional savoury bites and drinks to go with the desserts as well. 

A bowl of Lu Rou Fan (braised pork rice) with Singaporean flavours goes for S$5.80, and there are nostalgic childhood snacks like satay ampai (fish satay, S$2.50), Chee Cheong Fun (S$5.50), Kueh Pai Tee (S$6.80) and more.

The Flight of Three (S$9.80) is a trio of royal chrysanthemum, amaranth and marigold teas served in small glasses. They make for great shots, but if you are still feeling thirsty, you might want to consider a hot floral tea pot (S$6.80).

Fun fact, the alfresco area of the cafe is also pet-friendly! Do remember to bring some mozzie spray to ward off the mosquitoes though.

You can take your time to visit the cafe — it’s open till 1.30am throughout the week. You’ll probably even find yourself going back for more soon!

The Pikachu GameBoy is especially adorable, with an adorable Pikachu on the console as well as the start screen. Pokémon fans will find plenty of Pokémon games and merchandise, with various designs and titles to choose from.

Castlevania fans can also find 00s’ titles from the series such as Circle of the Moon, where you play as a vampire hunter in pursuit of Count Dracula… Harmony of Dissonance, where you play as Belmont descendant Juste to acquire Dracula’s relics to find his missing childhood friend… And Aria of Sorrow, the first Castlevania game to be set in modern times following an exchange student who finds himself in Dracula’s castle at the centre of a prophecy.

For classics lovers, you can also find titles like Final Fantasy, Super Mario Bros. 3, and more. There’s something for 90s’ kids and new gamers alike, with the store’s diverse range of game titles. 

Apart from retailing games and consoles, the store also offers customers the chance to customise your own consoles. Whether it’s a Pokemon-themed GameBoy Advance or a MacDonalds-themed console, you can get a personalised console to call your own. If you’ve got a broken console, the store also offers repair services. 

With shelves of games to explore and plenty of game consoles to look at, Retronutz is definitely a must-visit for video game lovers.

Apart from the fancy cars, you can also view a digital photography exhibition, Ahead of Time, at the ARTitude Galeria at Dempsey Hill, featuring breast cancer survivors and their stories, captured by prominent Singaporean photographers such as renowned portrait photographer Russel Wong, street photographer Aik Beng Chia, among others. 

Slots for the vintage car experience can only be booked on site at the Breast Cancer Foundation’s booth, and the first 100 visitors will receive an exclusive welcome pack, so come early to snag your vintage joyride.

This shop located in Yishun Junction 9 is packed to the brim with hundreds of retro snacks that will give you a nostalgia trip. Walking into the store was like walking down memory lane, spotting all my childhood favourites.

Right as I stepped in, my attention was quickly captured by Nelly’s Retro Snack’s sprawling shelves of metal tins, filled with biscuits that I haven’t seen in years.

There were Wafers (S$1.20/100g) in every colour imaginable, fiery Tapioca Chips (S$1.50/100g), melt-in-mouth Xiao Man Tou (S$1.50/100g), and most importantly — my first love Iced Gem Biscuits (S$1.20/100g).

I could already taste the blissful sweetness just by looking at the vibrantly-hued icing on top. That’s why I quickly got some before I moved on.

After I finished devouring all the biscuits with my eyes, I walked into an area in Nelly’s Retro Snacks that had a goodie-filled shelf of candy and a section of assorted sweets which you can Pick and Mix. Brings me back to after-school trips to popular shops like Mini Toons.

It’s a buffet consisting of Mentos, Yupi gummies of every kind, those Coca-Cola Tablets, and other classics like Airheads. Everything was displayed in a very familiar mamak shop style configuration that made me seriously miss my childhood.

Another interesting find was this old-school 7-eleven glass case that housed cups of the addictive seafood-flavoured Craze Hottis (S$2.50/cup). Nelly’s Retro Snacks is really full of easter eggs at every corner

This was a classic that was swarmed with kids at any 7-Eleven stall that had a school nearby. It was eventually removed from 7-Eleven stores, so imagine my (pleasant) surprise to run into one of these here.

After I was done browsing, this caught my eye right as I exited the store with my tasty loot — gashapon machines! In the same bright-coloured plastic casings no less, just like the old days.

So if you’re looking for a blast to the past or just wanna escape your adult responsibilities (like I do), Nelly’s Retro Snacks will give you all the deja vu you need as you spot all your childhood favourites.

But if you’re a responsible adult (unlike me) and are too busy to make a trip down, their snacks are also available for online delivery. Just a few iced gems can’t hurt my diet… right?
