Quick question, what is your comfort food?
As much as I love experimenting and trying different types of food, I would always return to Chinese home-cooked food at the end of the day. This always rejuvenates my soul and body, and leaves me full of energy.
Siong Tong Gai (上汤街) is one that satisfies my cravings. Known for its seafood delights and well-known innovative Chinese dishes, this definitely hit the spot (even more after a long day of shopping).
The Malaysian restaurant was founded in 2008, offering high-quality broth and seafood which has kept its fanbase loyal. Over almost two decades, they have expanded to 12 outlets and finally opened their first overseas branch in Somerset.
When stepping into the restaurant, the first thing I noticed was how clean and bright the interior was. Next, the spaciousness of the space caught my eye as well as the warm, ambient lighting.
I took a quick look at the menu and it ranges from your standard Chinese food, such as Crispy Homemade Tofu with Minced Meat (S$13.80), Fried Prawns with Soy Sauce (S$28.80) to modern dishes like Sweet and Sour Popcorn Pork (S$20.80).
However, do note that their portion is pretty huge, so I would recommend bringing a couple of friends or family members to share with you.
We tried a couple of dishes, and I would say that my favourite was the Signature Three Treasure (S$35 for 2 people) which was highly suggested to be eaten with rice. For those wondering, Three Treasure stands for the clams, prawns, and squid (I suppose it’s the three treasures of the sea).
What stood out to me was the clean broth, which went down easy on the throat and had a hint of ginger aftertaste. The recipe has been perfected for over three decades and still remains a secret today. Yet somehow, it reminded me of my grandmother’s cooking (maybe a grandmother’s love is the secret to this?).
As per the restaurant’s recommendation, we added on the Hifin Patin (S$8.80 per 100gm). There were 13 different options to choose from, such as Seabass, Red Tilapia, Dragon Grouper, and more. Alas, the difference between freshwater fish and saltwater fish eludes me. Therefore, I went with what was suggested.
Hifin Patin is a type of freshwater catfish that was tender and slipped right off the bone. If you are a fish connoisseur, you might know better than me what would be the best fish to choose for this dish.
To celebrate their new opening, they have a promotion that is too good to miss. From 28 October 2024 to 28 November 2024, selected ala carte dishes are going at S$1 with the purchase of any Signature Steamed Dishes.
The selected dishes include Sweet and Sour Popcorn Pork, Deep Fried Pork Belly, Poached Lady Finger and more. Do note that this offer is only from Monday to Thursday.
Adding on to the celebration, they also released three Singapore-exclusive dishes: Stir-Fried Pork with Green Pepper (S$18.80), Golden Crispy Chicken Drumettes (S$18.80) and Double Delight Pork Chop (S$18.80).
Certainly, this restaurant is one that I would bring my family down to. Will you add this to the list of restaurants to try out?
