The popular retro American diner Joji’s Diner may have closed their Stanley Street outlet, but did you know that they’re now open 24 hours in Serangoon?

There’s no need to travel to Ang Mo Kio for Banh Mi Saigon, home to arguably Singapore’s best banh mi, when you can visit its sister outlet, Miss Saigon in Orchard Plaza.

Ask anyone where the best supper spot in Serangoon Gardens is, and you’re likely to get R.K. Eating House as the answer.

You won’t go wrong with any of the prata selections, but the bustling eatery is perhaps best known for its legendary R.K. Special, also known as Prata Tsunami. Crispy kosong prata is torn into pieces and slathered in a mixture of curries, sambal, mutton chunks, chicken thigh, and two runny soft-boiled eggs — very sinful, but oh-so-satisfying.

16. 126 Dim Sum Wen Dao Shi

126 Dim Sum Wen Dao Shi is probably the second most popular dim sum supper spot in Singapore after Swee Choon. If you remember, the eatery actually closed in 2024 before opening again (in the same spot!) recently.

The old-school eatery boasts an extensive Hong Kong-style dim sum menu featuring crowd favourites like king-sized siew mai, Shanghai soup dumplings, extra flowy liu sha bao, and so much more. 

You can have a hearty feast whenever you like at this Geylang institution but just be prepared to queue during peak hours.

17. Nana Original Thai Food

Formerly located at Golden Mile Complex, the beloved Nana Original Thai Food continues to dish out tasty and authentic Thai cuisine.

There are six outlets in Singapore, but you’ll have to head down to either the one along Clementi Road (which is often packed with students from the neighbouring NUS), or at Aperia Mall in Kallang for your fix of Basil Rice, Pickled Crab Salad, and Tom Yum round the clock.

21. Dou Yong Tau Foo

If yong tau foo is what you crave in the wee hours of the night, the halal Dou Yong Tau Foo has four outlets that are open 24/7: Bukit Panjang, Ang Mo Kio, Jurong West, Bedok, and Woodlands.

Take your pick from the extensive buffet-style selection of fresh ingredients, which include the likes of vegetables, stuffed chillies, beancurd, and fish paste, all priced at S$0.80 each (a la carte).

Most of us tend to focus on our hair, all while severely neglecting our scalp. I hate to break it to you, but it’s impossible to have a healthy head of hair without proper scalp care, which is as important as skincare. 

After all, the scalp, as an extension of your face, is no less susceptible to dryness, irritation, and inflammation. Fortunately, these issues are really common and easy to identify, so here are the four main signs that your scalp is in need of some serious TLC, and how to tackle them.

1. You keep losing hair

Losing hair is natural and occurs for most people over time, especially with age. However, if you’re always finding excessive hair on your pillow, shower floor or comb (after brushing) — rapid and constant hair loss — you most likely have an unhealthy scalp. 

Of course, hair loss can also be attributed to one’s family history, diet, and stress levels, but it doesn’t hurt to consult a professional, which I will go into more detail about. 

2. You have a lot of dandruff

Ah, one of the most common skin conditions out there — dandruff. Characterised by white, oily flakes and itchiness, dandruff is typically caused by the buildup of oil, debris, dead skin, and various products. 

Dandruff also tends to accumulate on one’s hair and shoulders, which can be extra embarrassing if you’re wearing dark-coloured clothing. Definitely not a good look if you’ve got an important upcoming interview, meeting, or even a date! 

Fortunately, dandruff can be treated, and you’ll find out how in a bit.

3. Your scalp is always itchy

Not only is an itchy scalp extremely frustrating to deal with, but it also gets worse the more you scratch.  

A good rule of thumb is to seek help if your scalp has been itching for more than three months — even if you’ve been exfoliating and using the right shampoo. It’s always better to seek a second opinion when in doubt, so that the experts can point you to the right solution. 

4. Your scalp is red and irritated 

Lastly, redness and irritation can stem from different factors, ranging from an allergic reaction or irritation from using a certain product; excessive heat; or even a sunburn, to more serious underlying conditions.

For real though, you can’t go wrong with breaded and deep-fried beef cutlets (the beef equivalent of tonkatsu).

Good news for beef lovers: Japan’s biggest gyukatsu chain, Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu, has opened in Singapore at none other than this season’s most “happening” mall — Raffles City.

The casual restaurant chain, which hails from Kyoto, prepares its iconic gyukatsu by coating the beef in a batter made of flour, eggs, and breadcrumbs, before frying it for around 60 to 120 seconds till it reaches a perfect medium rare.

It’s meant to be thick and juicy, with a crisp, golden brown exterior.

And, that’s exactly what I got when I went down for lunch. Oh man, let me tell you it was the wrong choice to do so. As the food was so good, I ended up in a food coma and guess who had work afterwards?

You can look forward to a selection of five curated cuts of beef: chuck tail flap, sirloin, tenderloin, tongue, and wagyu. Most diners tend to order the half-half version, which comes with two different cuts on the same plate.

This comes in the form of their Half-and-Half Gyukatsu Zen, with the two crowd-favourites being the Sirloin and Tenderloin (S$29) or Sirloin and Beef Tongue (S$32)

All the meats are served medium rare but you’ll have the option to cook them further if you like. I especially recommend doing so for the Tenderloin, which boasts a more tender and juicier texture when placed on your mini hot stove.

Here’s a tip: sear the sides for around five to ten seconds. I found that was the optimal time frame to achieve the best flavour — coming from someone who typically goes for medium rare.

Regardless of which cuts you go for, each Gyukatsu Zen comes with a bowl of rice, miso soup, onsen egg and a bunch of condiments, including Kyoto-style curry, wasabi, pepper and dashi soy sauce.

It may sound weird but trust me when I say you gotta top your sirloin with a touch of wasabi before dipping it into the dashi sauce. Their wasabi won’t overwhelm the beef or give you a nose burn — a clear sign that it’s of high quality.

However, if you want to go all out, treat yourself to the A5 Miyazaki Wagyu Sirloin (S$55). For this, skip the condiments and just savour it on its own. The wagyu simply melted in my mouth and offered a rich, buttery flavour.

In fact, it was so rich that I had to cleanse my palate every once in a while in order to not get overwhelmed.

I cleansed with the Sukkirito Apple Juice (S$4.20), while my dining partner went for the Tsubumi Orange Juice (S$4.20).

For those coming down for dinner, feel free to accompany your gyukatsu with a bottle of sake. I personally would opt for the Okunomatsu Yuzu Toro (S$9 for 50ml, S$69 for 500ml) as its bright and refreshing taste will help combat palate fatigue.

It’s located along King George’s Avenue, in the unit formerly occupied by the now-defunct Habitat Coffee, just a 10-minute walk from Lavender MRT station.

Food-wise, the very diverse East-meets-West menu may leave you feeling pleasantly surprised.

Aside from obvious crowd favourites like Pulled Pork Benedict (S$22), Tori Katsu Sando (S$18), and Big Ben (S$24.50), a big breakfast with all the works, you’ll also spot several unique menu items that draw inspiration from Italian, Korean, and Chinese cuisine.

For instance, they’ve got Carbonara (S$19) prepared using an Italian recipe — featuring guanciale, not bacon, and with no cream — alongside Conchiglie Al Ragù (S$26), a tomato-based pasta with meat sauce, and even Cioppino (S$14), a robust seafood stew.

These are joined by the likes of Lava Chikin (S$22), Korean-style crispy chicken tossed in a melted “lava” sauce; Han’s Cool Chicken Rice (S$11), complete with a homemade garlic chilli soy sauce; and Saucy Noodle (S$9), their rendition of zha jiang mian (bean sauce noodles).

That’s not all, as you can also admire your masterpieces while tucking into desserts like Bingsu Baby (S$15) Korean-style shaved ice in flavours like soybean rice cake, matcha red bean, and mango sticky rice, alongside Croffles (S$11), Cheese Cake (S$8.80), and Key Lime Tart with Chia Seeds (S$7).

Once you’ve fueled up, head on over to the art jamming space — only if you’ve made a booking, of course.

Priced at S$40 for three hours, the Paint And Sip option will get you a 40cm x 50cm blank canvas and all the required materials for acrylic painting, along with unlimited soft drinks, coffee, and tea.

If you’re feeling adventurous and would rather try your hand at different painting mediums, a booking has to be made at least three days in advance. No prior experience is required, so all you need to do is show up!

This time, they’ve gone for a rustic Thai-inspired bungalow concept located in, you guessed it, Taman Melodies, the buzzy cafe hotspot.

As the name suggests, the menu largely draws inspiration from Thai flavours.

Apart from the café’s signature bagelwiches, you’ll find a selection of ‘premium’ items, such as the Nin (RM35.90), a combination of pulled lamb shoulder, Thai green chilli, and hash brown, and the Issac (RM42.90), starring an entire duck leg confit with orange Dijon mayo and fresh salad.

The priciest of the lot, Tommy (RM52.90), comes with a minced wagyu beef patty dressed in pickle mornay sauce, so order that if you’re feeling like treating yourself!

As for bagel flavours, there are tons more options to choose from, including Black Truffle, Salted Sakura, Thai Chilli Paste, and even Matcha Mochi Chicken Floss. Up your alley?

Seeking even more variety? Look no further than the selection of pasta, where you’ll find crowd favourites like Thai Green Curry Pasta (RM38.90) and Red Curry Pasta (RM37.90), served with pan-fried salmon and pulled smokey beef brisket, respectively.

Otherwise, keep it classic with Pomelo Salad In The Vase (RM26.90), a fresh prawn pomelo salad with aromatic, herbaceous notes, followed by Tom Yum Seafood (RM36.90), the cafe’s rendition of clear tom yum soup, packed with tiger prawns, mussels, and seabass fillet.

There’s even good ol’ fried rice with toppings like Petai & Tiger Prawn (RM33.90) and Crab Meat (RM37.90) if you’re really missing the true taste of Thailand.

Afterwards, quench your thirst with Thai Milk Tea Snowy Ice (RM34.90), shaved ice loaded with brown sugar jelly pearls, coconut jelly, almond flakes, crystal jelly, and sweet milk.

You can also go for one of their signature espresso-based drinks.

The menu is centered around coconut, with fun options like Coconut Cendol Latte (RM18.90), Coconut Americano (RM15.90), Brown Butter Coconut Latte (RM18.90), and Minty Coconut Latte (RM18.90).

The Thai theme extends into drinks like Thai Cham (RM14.90) and Cloud Thai Milk Tea (RM13.90), but you can still take your pick from a selection of regular coffee, tea, and matcha.

Do note that although regular operating hours are from 8am–10pm, they will be open from 8am–7pm for the time being.

If your encounters have been limited to greasy pub grub or fish and chips from food court “Western” stalls, it’s time to broaden your horizons.

Situated along the river in the buzzy Robertson Quay neighbourhood is Carnaby, a modern British gastropub serving up elevated comfort food classics.

Having first soft-launched at Gourmet Park Kampong Bugis, the restaurant is helmed by chef Adam Penney, the former executive chef of Potato Head.

The vibrantt 85-seater space, which takes its cue from the eponymous Carnaby Street in London, is a celebration of retro British music and culture.

With themed wall decor, a playlist of hits from the swinging ’60s, and a menu that showcases the best of British and local produce — drawing inspiration from Chef Adam’s childhood in Dublin and the UK — you’ll feel like you’ve been transported straight to the +44.

Although you could totally come by for date night, we recommend visiting in a group and ordering sharing plates for the best experience.

Keep it light with starters like the Smoked Herring Kipper Pate (S$18), a creamy, zesty Scottish smoked herring pâté with horseradish, cream cheese, and cracker-like melba toast for dipping.

There’s also the Chicken Liver Parfait (S$19), a rich and smooth chicken liver pâté enriched with port and brandy, served on toasted sourdough with sweet caramelised onion jam and pickled red shallots.

However, the starter that impressed me the most was the unassuming Ox Tomato Salad (S$21), comprising slices of juicy marinated Italian tomatoes with lovage, crunchy shallots and the most complex-tasting Rockstar cave cheddar — a type of cheese aged for 18 months in Welsh slate mines — along with malt vinegar and a caraway salad cream.

Each bite was herbaceous, salty, sweet, and funky in all the right ways — a very, very good combination of flavours and textures. And I’m not even the biggest fan of raw tomatoes.

Moving on to the signatures, the Beer Battered Fish & Chips (S$36) comes with all the fixings. Golden snapper is battered in Brewdog Punk IPA and vodka before being fried in rich beef fat (sorry, pescatarians), before being served alongside crispy fries, homemade tartare sauce, minty mushy peas, and torched lemon.

That being said, the batter here is the real star — light and airy, yet perfectly crisp with just the right amount of crackly bits.

Another classic, the Steak & Guinness Pie (S$35), sees seared chunks of beef and tendons in a rich, deeply savoury gravy made by simmering chicken stock, Guinness, and aromatics for six hours. It’s then topped off with a puff pastry lid that has the right balance of flaky and doughy.

You might, like me, find yourself craving a pint of Guinness (on tap, of course), but unfortunately, Carnaby doesn’t offer it. Oh well.

On the pie front, almost everyone at the table had second helpings of the Smoky Fish Pie (S$34), a traditional British staple similiar to that of shepherd’s pie.

The golden potato mash top (with immaculate piping, if I may add) gave way to a filling of smoked herring, haddock, golden snapper, leeks and carrots, all bound in a thick, creamy concoction of fish stock, mustard seeds, and milk.

Of all the mains we tried, it was the Carnaby Burger (S$36) that won me over — unsurprisingly, given Chef Adam’s Three Buns and Potato Head background.

The patty — a blend of chuck and ribeye cap — was literally dripping with juices, topped with a unique cave-aged cheddar that’s sweet, nutty, and well-rounded, along with homemade watermelon relish, house ketchup, and a secret Carnaby mayo on soft buns.

It was so good I almost completely disregarded the fries and coleslaw.

No British meal is complete without dessert, and at Carnaby, the menu stars nostalgic treats inspired by Chef Penney’s childhood favourites.

For something that oozes “comfort”, zero in on the Sticky Toffee Date Pudding (S$16), a British winter must-have, consisting of a rich, dense, and stodgy date pudding drenched in caramel butterscotch sauce and homemade vanilla ice cream.

If you’d like to end the evening on a fun, boozy note, go for the Trifle IPA Curd & Jelly (S$19), a playful twist on trifle, featuring beer-flavoured jelly and dark chocolate custard, balanced out with tart raspberry compote.

As for the “Allo Treacle” Tart (S$16), it had a gooey salted caramel filling, a dollop of Chantilly cream, and candied lemon zest, but it was the thin, crisp, and delighfully buttery tart case that truly stole the show.

So, if you still think British cuisine is “bland and uninteresting”, a visit to Carnaby will change your mind. I know I’ll be back when they launch their Sunday Roast menu.
