It could be the cosy communal dining, refillable banchan (side dishes) or the fact that you get to enjoy different cuts of meat cooked right in front of you. 

The only gripe that I have (which some of you may be able to relate to) is that the bill can very easily rack up and my wallet ends up paying the price for it later (literally). So that may be why so many of us choose to go to Johor Bahru instead because everything is priced at a third of its usual prices. 

Well, if you are in the mood to feast to your heart’s content, here are six affordable Korean BBQ spots in Johor Bahru with all-you-can-eat meats, unlimited sides, free-flow noodles and more from just S$10.

1. Sae Ma Eul BBQ

Nothing says affordable more than Sae Ma Eul BBQ’s Charcoal BBQ Buffet priced at just S$10.97++ (RM38.20) per adult and S$7.80++ (RM27.30) per kid for 100 minutes for a minimum of two diners. Think all-you-can-eat meats, including spicy chicken ribs, marinated pork ribs, spicy pork belly, pork belly, and pork shoulder.

Even better, they have a self-service banchan bar so you can help yourself to as much kimchi as you want. Just be mindful of the food wastage and try not to order more than what you can eat! 

As I always say, no meal is complete without desserts — go for the Bingsu (S$2.29, RM8) in an assortment of flavours like green tea, mango, black sesame and more. Although it is 25 minutes away from the checkpoint, this is definitely too good of a deal to miss out on.

2. Itaewon Korean BBQ Buffet

Alternatively, Itaewon Korean BBQ Buffet is another spot to consider, located just 30 minutes away from the checkpoint. 

Hit them up for lunch as the Korean Charcoal BBQ is only S$10.05++ (RM35) per adult and S$8.04++ (RM28) per child for 100 minutes. Those who are planning to come in the evening (after 4pm) may choose to opt for the dinner set for S$10.92++ (RM38) per adult and S$8.90++ (RM31) per kid. 

But, do take note that this is only available for a minimum of two diners so a couple’s date, perhaps? 

This buffet comes with unlimited refills of marinated and spicy pork cuts alongside grilled soy sauce chicken ribs — perfect for meat lovers. 

Not to mention, there is a self-service bar and each diner is entitled to a marshmallow skewer for a toasty treat.

3. Zen Plus Korean BBQ

If you’re someone who prefers variety, Zen Plus Korean BBQ is the place to go in Johor Bahru because they offer the Unlimited Han Sang at just S$11.20++ (RM39) per adult and S$8.04++ (RM28) per kid for 90 minutes. 

Besides getting free-flow meats like pork belly, chicken ribs and more, you can supplement it with carbs like kimchi stew, Korean rice ball, tteokbokki, pizza, and all-you-can-eat ramen.

Have you ever heard of  gorgonzola (cheese) pizza dipped in honey as part of a KBBQ set?  

Well, I haven’t, but I can see how it would help to cut down the greasiness after feasting on all those meats. Considering its sweet and savoury profile, it would be popular amongst the kids or those with a sweet tooth. 

Nonetheless, it’s definitely a hearty meal to treat yourself with.

Unlike the previous spots, this palsaik set comes with pork belly in eight different marinades. Think ginseng, wine, pine, garlic, herb, curry, soybean, and hot pepper for you to embark on a gastronomic adventure. 

To complete your KBBQ experience, the set also comes with a comforting bowl of jjigae (stew) of your choice including soybean paste, spicy seafood or kimchi pork.

They have a set for two pax at just S$34.46 (RM120) serving samgyeopsal (pork belly), a stew of your choice (pork kimchi, red pepper paste or soybean paste), and a steamed egg with flying fish roe. 

Just looking at the juicy and succulent pieces of pork belly bursting with flavour has my mouth watering.

That being said, it’ll be fun to come dressed in your best dreamy spring outfit because there are plenty of IG-worthy spots worth exploring.

Menu-wise, you can mainly expect there to be desserts like cake, bingsu, and drinks that are just as aesthetic as its interior. Think an entire spread of strawberry-flavoured desserts like Strawberry Milk (S$4.59, RM16), Strawberry Bingsu (S$4.31, RM15), and Strawberry Cream Cake (S$6.60, RM23). 

You can never go wrong with this sweet and tangy combination.

Similar to most free-to-enter food bazaars in JB, there will be a plethora of street fare including traditional favourites, fried snacks, and not to mention sweet treats as you enjoy the live DJ performances. 

You can expect to find savoury delights like saucy meat tacos, sweet-spicy boneless yangnyeom chicken, and cheesy beef loaded fries from Abang Wagyu.

But, if you’re planning to try out everything at the bazaar, you might wanna start off with something simple like bubur matjipat (savoury porridge filled with hearty ingredients). 

Or munch on a light snack like Thai-style meat skewers and satay alongside tauhu bergedil (potato stuffed tofu) from Hutan Bandar.

Those with a massive sweet tooth (like myself) will probably find themselves stationed in front of Happy Bakes to try the trending chocolate covered strawberries (now you don’t have to fly all the way to London just to have a taste of the treat).

Just don’t indulge too much as there are tons of other desserts and pastries vendors to check out as well. This includes the likes of cheesecake tarts, kunfa, brownies, ice cream with croissants, dark chocolate crookies and so much more.

Be prepared to come on an empty stomach (and a full wallet) as there is gonna be a plethora of food vendors. With over 80 F&B stalls selling authentic Thai hot dishes and plenty of halal options, it’s as if you’re actually transported to Bangkok.

What’s a Thai meal without your usual tom yum mama alongside moo ping (grilled BBQ meat skewers)? 

Don’t forget to eat it with a side of tangy and citrusy seafood som tam (papaya salad) to cut down the spice. 

To end on a sweeter note, get the dessert that’s most popular in the summertime — refreshing mango sticky rice drizzled with coconut milk.

Besides that, you can also find conventional street snacks like corn dogs with mozzarella (there’s even a chocolate version if you’re feeling brave), sweet potato balls, buldak ramen and more.

Seafood lovers will rejoice to hear that they have a wide spread of dishes to choose from. Think juicy prawns over heavily seasoned rice, large fried squid, char kuey teow with scallops, and mini baby fried crabs in BBQ seasoning.

I know that I won’t. 

From the lively crowd and cheery atmosphere to the extremely pocket-friendly street grub and drinks, there is much to explore (and eat). 

Here’s another bazaar to save if you find yourself wanting to try something different besides your usual food haunt. 

Jom Makan by Food Republik is a pop-up food bazaar that will take place from now till 26 May 2024 at Skudai, just a 30 minutes drive away from the checkpoint. 

Although it can take a little longer to get there, I promise it will be worth it as there are over 100 F&B vendors to satisfy all your cravings. 

You can expect to find a range of local street fare and international cuisines from Thailand, Mexican, and even Belgium.

Food-wise, there are crowd favourites like nasi ayam, kambing bakar BBQ (roasted lamb), and laksa sarang burung. 

Unlike the Singaporean laksa which is more lemak because of the coconut milk, the Malaysian laksa has a slightly different preparation. It features a nest-shaped fried egg on a bed of crispy vermicelli noodles in a tangy and sour broth. 

It seems like we can’t get enough of Turkish street fare as there is sure to be at least one kebab stall at every bazaar (not that I’m complaining). 

Cheesy, saucy, and oh–so tender, the smoky and chargrilled lamb stuffed with cheese seems almost too hard to resist.

Too hungry to wait? 

Bring on the heat with the Thai-style meat skewers simmered in spicy tom yum broth. Simply pick and choose from the wide array of meat and seafood skewers like prawns, meatballs, fishcake, and sausages. 

Or get the loaded fries that come in various flavours like tomato pasta, smoked BBQ, Korean spicy, nacho cheese. 

Otherwise, you can always mix and match it to get more variety for those who are planning to share.

Here’s something that you don’t see at a bazaar everyday — you can get Greek desserts including baklava and basbousa. 

The latter boasts a syrup-soaked semolina cake that’s incredibly moist and tender (a super indulgent sweet treat). 

They also have a “bird nest” version of the baklava which is doused in sugary syrup and filled with various kinds of chocolate and crunchy almonds.  

Besides that, you can satisfy your sweet tooth with desserts including kunafa, crombolini AKA circular croissants, tanghulu, stuffed donuts, and so much more. 

All that walking around under the sun must be tiring so don’t forget to stay hydrated. 

Get the mango dragon float with generous scoops of vanilla ice cream or the extremely colourful, fruity yoghurt drinks. 

But, if you’re coming in a group, go for the “bucket drink” instead. Choose from sweet corn, pandan coconut, honeydew melon, or mixed fruit that comes with fresh fruits and jelly as a cooling refresher.  

With so many interesting foods to choose from, we’re practically spoiled for choice.

That is why I’m always on the lookout for the next dessert spot to satisfy my sweet cravings. If you’re planning a trip to JB soon, you should definitely give this hidden dessert spot a go.

D.Shiki in Mount Austin offers snow ice desserts with a huge variety of flavours and toppings. Whether you’re a fan of durian or taro desserts, this place will have something for you to enjoy. 

Durian fanatics might already know that there is a specific season to get the best durians, but nobody wants to wait that long just to have it. 

D.Shiki’s snow ice durian series lets you enjoy the king of fruit, without having to endure the long wait. The series features the popular Musang King (Mao Shan Wang) so you know that you’re getting the best of the best.

The classic Durian Little King (S$11.39, RM39.90) sees fluffy durian snow ice that comes loaded with Musang King paste and puree. 

It may be slightly pricier than the typical snow ice, but it comes with actual durian flesh and can be shared between one to three people — super value-for-money if you think about it. 

There are other variations of the durian snow ice which come with additional fruits and toppings as well. 

The Durian Queen (S$11.10, RM38.90) comprises a fusion of creamy durian paste and sweet mango to enjoy refreshing bliss in every spoonful. 

But, if you’re feeling extra indulgent, The Durian Prince (S$10.53, RM36.90) featuring rich chocolate flavours will do just the trick.

Besides their durian series, there are other premium flavours including Matcha, Strawberry, and Mango for just S$9.39 (RM32.90) each.

Anyone who goes crazy for taro-related desserts will be highly interested in the Yam (S$8.25, RM28.90) snow ice that comprises rich, velvety yam paste to complement the refreshing fluffy shaved ice.

Not in the mood for snow ice?

Get the Belgian Waffle that is crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, paired with a variety of toppings. 

The Mixed Fruits (S$8.25, RM28.90) comes with an entire Belgian waffle topped with fresh kiwis, strawberries, blueberries and a scoop of ice cream. 

Those who can never resist chocolate should try the Chocolate (S$8.25, RM28.90) waffle alongside a scoop of ice cream drizzled in syrup and marshmallows.

All things aside, D.Shiki would make for a perfect pit stop if you’re ever in the mood to indulge in an icy treat, especially in this blistering heat.

Hidden away in Mount Austin, Xiao Xiang Zi offers affordable grilled skewers way past midnight. 

How affordable are we talking? 

Price-wise, each skewer starts from just S$0.30 (RM1) and there are a plethora of meat, seafood, and veggies to choose from. If you’re looking for somewhere that is wallet-friendly and has variety, you might wanna consider dropping by.

This place is hard to miss as it is fully decked out with a retro interior and eye-catching bright neon lit signs that give off a casual atmosphere. 

If you’re lucky, you might be able to catch the live band playing at the second level whilst enjoying your food.

You can expect to find a decent spread of lok lok skewers like Cheese Hotdog, Seafood Tofu, Tiger Prawn, Broccoli, Pork and Enoki Mushroom, Pandan Chicken, Smoked Duck, Coin Pork Meat, and Enoki Mushroom. 

These skewers are fried on the spot and it comes with a special dipping powder to pair with for an extra spicy kick.

Otherwise, you can opt to cook the skewers in their soup which is refillable from S$3.68 (RM12.90). The flavours include Tom Yum, Rattan Pepper Oil, Herbal Soup, Tomato Soup, and their signature Mala.

The mala soup comes in four different levels of spiciness, but fair warning, even the lowest level brings on a fiery heat so eat at your own risk!

Located just 10 minutes away from the checkpoint, Kopi O-Rama Raya will take place from 3 to 5 May 2024 at Carpark Plaza Seni

The lineup includes over 50 vendors ranging from F&B stores to vintage thrifting and entertaining live performances from local artists and bands. 

Unlike other popular bazaars, Kopi O-Rama Raya is open earlier from 10am to 12am on both days so you can easily get a head start on your shopping.

Food-wise, you’ll be delighted to find an interesting array of local street fare. 

Hit up Mee Kari Nyonya for curry noodles with fishcakes or Fav Fatimah serving good ol’ nasi lemak with crispy chicken and sambal belacan. The latter comes wrapped in banana leaves so you can always take it on-the-go if the place gets too crowded. 

Otherwise, Bubur Matjitpat sells bowls of savoury porridge with hearty ingredients — a super comforting yet simple meal.

You can never go wrong with crowd favourites like Sausage Sizzle Seri Alam offering black pepper hotdogs alongside a side of nachos slathered in the sauce of your choice like sriracha mayo, jalapeno salsa or honey mustard.

Besides that, TacoBaa.JB serves corn tacos that are filled with shredded chicken or beef, crunchy veggies and nacho cheese sauce. 

Meat lovers should check out Ayam Gunting Vamos as they offer thick slabs of crispy, fried chicken in a spicy and savoury seasoning (definitely for those who like their food to have an extra kick).

Alternatively, Abang Wagyu offers heavily seasoned char-grilled smoky beef steak skewers that’s made-to-order, while KaiJia Muslim Food has pan-fried dumplings served with their signature chilli oil.

Wash it all down and get your daily dose of matcha sorted at Unicha Matcha. 

They have various renditions of matcha drinks like the viral strawberry matcha latte, matcha creamy latte, passionfruit matcha latte, passionfruit matcha soda, and so much more.

Butif the queues are a tad too long, there are other vendors like Kopi Se.nja, Panda Coffee, and Lepau Coffee.

For those who aren’t a fan of caffeine, why not try out Ngopi JB instead?

They serve non-coffee drinks like the Supreme Chocolate, Green Tea, and Vanilla Strawberry Milkshake that come with a generous amount of whipped cream. 

Craving for something sweet?

The Pine offers dessert croffles stuffed with cream cheese, nutella or biscoff spread and crunchy nuts (it’s a light snack that you can munch on if you aren’t feeling very hungry).

If I were there, I’d immediately make a beeline for Vanillicious as they have IG-worthy mini pavlovas topped with fresh fruits.

Located in Mount Austin, Slow Day Cafe has a unique concept where you can sip on matcha lattes whilst art jamming! 

This spacious cafe is filled with comfy sofas and plush pillows that exude a chill and cosy ambience with a brightly lit art corner tucked away in the back.

Each Art Jamming Session goes for S$45.34 (RM159) per pax for three hours. 

You’ll be provided with all the painting materials including acrylic paints, brushes, palette, and an apron (so you don’t have to be worried about getting messy). There’s no better opportunity to unleash your creativity and paint your troubles away.

Additionally, you’ll get to choose one drink and one cake from the menu! 

Food-wise, they have an extensive signature matcha series featuring different types of cakes and beverages. 

If you’re an avid tea drinker, you’d be familiar with popular flavours like matcha, genmaicha, and hojicha.

If you’re lucky, you might even get to try the Buvette Matcha Mousse or Belgian Chocolate Mousse that features a bear that’s almost too adorable to eat.

So, of course you’ll need something to fuel your day, but sometimes we aren’t exactly in the mood for something too filling. 

Luckily for us, Manbo Bagel is a quaint bakery in Batu Pahat, Johor— about a two hour’s drive from JB — that serves freshly baked sourdough bread and bagels with unique flavour combinations.

It’s not to be confused with the ever-so-popular JB, but it’s nice to switch things up every now and then.

It makes for a quick and simple midday snack and the prices are relatively affordable given that they use quality Japanese flour and natural ingredients.

When you’re there, you have to try the stuffed bagels with different fillings. 

Each bagel has a soft and chewy texture which pairs well with the rich filling from the Japanese-inspired bagels including the Uji Hojicha Chestnut Mochi (S$2.84, RM10) and Purple-Yam & Soy Kinako (S$2.56, RM9).

Both make for a heartier snack that’ll keep your tummy satisfied for quite a while. 

Otherwise the Summer Molly Passion Fruit Yuzu (S$2.56, RM9) or Summer Passonfruit (S$1.70, RM6) comes through with its tangy and refreshing flavour profile — perfect for this sweltering heat.

There are many flavours to suit everyone’s taste buds from dessert bagels such as Double Chocolate Indulgence (S$2.27, RM8) and Mocha-Biscoff Caramelized Apple (S$3.12, RM11) to savoury sandwich bagels like Cheddar-Melt (S$1.99, RM7).

If you’re visiting in a large group, they also have sourdough focaccia or pizza to share.

The Cherry Tomato Cheddar Herbs Focaccia (S$2.84, RM10) features a golden, light, and airy sourdough focaccia bread that is lightly drizzled with olive oil and mixed herbs.

For the same price, you could get the Italian Red Pesto Tomato Chicken Pizza (S$2.84, RM10) or Roasted Potato Turkey Ham Mozzarella Focaccia (S$2.84, RM10) that comprises mixed vegetables and smoky bits of meat.

Regardless of whether you are there for breakfast, lunch or tea, it’d make for a great pit stop with a decent variety of sourdough bakes to choose from.
