Jimmy Monkey Cafe & Bar doesn’t monkey around when it comes to their coffee, seeing how they are known as the home of Singapore’s first Slayer Espresso Machine.

When your taste buds can’t decide which way to go, check out HOUSE DOWNSTAIRS with their cheekily-named Dong Xi menu, which translates to East West.

Western delights offered include Spiced Baked Eggs (S$16), Potato Rosti with Sour Cream (S$10), and the plainly named Fat (S$16), a hearty mix of smashed avocado, tomatoes, feta, sunny egg, salad, and sourdough.

Or turn to the East for some Gochujang Chicken With Rice (S$16), Laksa Goreng (S$17), and more.

Nothing like cooling off in Singapore’s heat with the quintessential ice cream at Burnt Cones. The beloved gelato chain’s Sunset Way outlet shares a close proximity to both Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Singapore Polytechnic.

While their flavours rotate, some you may recognise include Madagascan Vanilla, 85% Dark Chocolate, Reese’s Peanut Butter, and Ube.

Bread Yard

Singapore Polytechnic has Oasis Hideout, which serves quality Western fare, but Bread Yard is here to bring some competition.

Bread Yard’s name hints that it’s better known for its artisanal bakes, but to really fill you up, get their affordable pastas available during weekday lunch hours.

From Aglio Olio (S$8) and Mafaldine Pesto (S$8) to Fettuccine Miso Cream (S$8) and Capellini Mentaiko (S$8), Bread Yard’s pastas will surely satisfy any craving.

Abundance

There’s no need to travel for Taiwanese fare when we’ve got a piece of Taiwan here at Abundance, a restaurant bar in Lengkok Bahru.

You can find an a-bun-dance of the classic Taiwanese street food Gua Bao (S$7.90), or pork belly bun, and CCB (Crispy Chicken Bao) (S$7.90).

Y’all don’t need an introduction to Elijah Pies, right? This once home-based bakery shot to social media fame with their out-of-this-world pies, especially the Wild Berry Lavender Pie due to its stunning kaleidoscopic patterns (I’m sure you’ve seen or tried it).

Their popularity has led them to open up a physical space at Tanjong Pagar, and time flies as the bakery is currently marking their 10th Anniversary this month. The new flavours introduced is a way to thank loyal fans (and gain new ones as well).

A new flavour added is the Pistachio Praliné Pie (S$65). Creamy pistachio crémeux is covered in a shortcrust pastry and topped with crunchy nut butter praliné.

As for the mini pies, there are three new flavours to look forward to: Honey Yuzu, Taro Mochi, and Sticky Caramel. These flavours come in a box of nine (S$28.90) and are perfect for parties, gifts or even simply a treat for yourself (no judgement here, we all have those days).

While the dessert pies are what made Elijah pies famous, that doesn’t mean you should give their savoury pies a miss. In fact, their Scallop Chowder Pie is a crowd-favourite.

For something savoury, dig into Wagyu Sukiyaki (S$18.90), Elijah’s Big Breakfast (S$14.90), and Snow Crab Laksa Pie (S$16.90). These are only available for dine-in and that’s because all the ingredients are freshly prepared on the spot.

The wagyu is cooked upon order, eggs are added to the breakfast pie before baking, and the snow crab is garnished on top of the pie before it’s brought to your table.

Pair these pies with their selection of handcrafted drinks, which also see an expansion. Matcha lovers, choose from two new flavours: Matcha Strawberry (S$8.50) and Matcha Mango (S$8.50).

And, since the bakery uses Uji matcha for the ice cubes, you won’t have to worry about your drinks becoming diluted.

Other concoctions revealed are Vanilla Pistachio (S$9.90) and Peanut Butter & Jelly (S$8.90). These drinks seem like they’ll be jelak, so make sure to have a glass of water beside you!

This time, I’m shining the spotlight on one particular bakery in Singapore that’s sure to satisfy anyone’s Labubu obsession — especially if their birthdays or special occasions are coming up. This bakery is none other than Bob the Baker Boy, which needs no introduction due to how viral their custom cakes can be.

As such, it’s no wonder their Labubu creations are turning heads. They offer not just one but four delightful options: bento cakes, mini cakes, cupcakes, and a customisable cake that hides a surprise inside (I’ll get to this later!).

While this hobby works wonders for my mental health, it’s not so kind to my wallet. Cafes in Singapore are hella pricey, so if you’re like me and love cafe goods, it’s best to have deep pockets.

Apparently, a baker heard our prayers and gave us cafe-style pastries at accessible prices. Tarts, cakes and croissants for just S$3.80? Sign me up!

Of course, you can’t expect Lian Hup Heng to have a fancy interior. Heck, it isn’t even air-conditioned as the store sits in a hawker centre, namely Amoy Street Food Centre. 

At the end of the day, the bakery is fuss-free, reliable and uncomplicated — offering a small yet refined spread of pastries.

Everything here looks delicious but there’s one pastry that catches everyone’s eye (probably yours too): Orh Nee Tart. With a luscious purple yam surrounded by a buttery tart shell, the Orh Nee Tart is a must-have for every taro lover.

It’s further topped with a large ginkgo nut to add some nuttiness to an otherwise overly creamy texture (not that I’m complaining).

Another tart that might get sold out in a matter of seconds is the Lemon Meringue Tart. 

Basic? Maybe a little, but the lemon curd here is done so well, striking the perfect balance of tanginess and sweetness. The meringue cookie sitting on top provides an oh-so-satisfying crunch.

Completing the collection of crowd-favourite tarts are the Pear Tart and Lian’s Dark Indulgence, featuring 72% dark chocolate for a rich, intense flavour.

Every once in a while, the bakery shop may whip up a new item that’s available for a limited time only. At the time of writing, they’re serving up a Matcha Chocolate Tart and Blueberry Crumble Tart which just sound too tempting!

Their other permanent baked goods include Fudgy Brownies, Banana Walnut Bread and Yogurt Cranberry Cake, which can be accompanied alongside your tarts for a filling breakfast or afternoon tea.

You can even get their freshly baked croissants but do note they’re only available on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday!

Considering that Lian Hup Heng opens only from 10.30am to 3pm, trust me — get there early to avoid any disappointment. Once the goodies are sold out, the owners will pack up and call it a day.

But, we can’t forget about the other areas and I think it’s about time that we steer our attention towards the North and pay a visit to one (or two) hidden gems there. 

If that wasn’t enough to convince you, this hole-in-the-wall spot may do just the trick.

quasont is a cosy bakery and brunch cafe decorated with modern and chic furnishing in wooden accents, just a stone’s throw away from 888 Plaza in Woodlands. 

It’s hard to miss it as you’ll be able to spot (or even smell) the stunning display of freshly baked pastries from afar. Think croissants, waffles, breads, cheesecakes and so much more — you’ll definitely be spoiled for choice.

The quasont selections range from S$2.80–S$4.80 and include the likes of butter kaya, hazelnut chocolate croissant filled with luscious cream filling, and fruit danish with sweet custard.

For those who choose to go down the savoury route, opt for the cream cheese garlic, tuna croissant or sausage danish, all baked to golden perfection.

For those who aren’t a fan of croissants, there are other pastries and bread from S$2–S$3.80 like the coffee butter, black sesame mochi, red bean mochi, chicken floss with sausage and many more to munch on.

Dropping by for lunch?

Choose from their hot mains and small bites which comprises Seafood Aglio Olio (S$13.80), Salmon Fillet (S$16.80) alongside Tater Pops (S$6.80) and Buffalo Wings (S$9.80).  

Make it a full meal affair with coffee like Einspanner (S$6) or Strawberry Elderflower Brewed Tea (S$5) for non-caffeine lovers.  

But, if you’re in need of a midday sweet treat, treat yourself to a Matcha Cream Roll (S$2.20) AKA cream horns for a nostalgic throwback. Or if you’re throwing a mini celebration, they have slices of Burnt Cheesecake (S$8.80) and Black Forest Cake (S$5.50) up for grabs as well.

That being said, the display selections might rotate daily so I’d check in with the shop before heading down to prevent disappointment.

Considering their extensive menu, it seems like the perfect place to have all your cravings sorted in one place. Just take note that they have limited seating so I’d encourage you to make your way down earlier if you’re planning to dine-in with friends or family.

Just three minutes away from Raffles Place MRT Station, Pawa Bakery is a takeaway kiosk selling Japanese-inspired bread and bagels at an affordable price.

Pawa Bakery boasts an impressive selection of bagels to grab-and-go, including the Original Bagel (S$2.50) so that you can DIY your own breakfast.

Perhaps a simple combination of cream cheese or smoked salmon with avocado will do just the trick?

Alternatively, you can go down the sweet route with the Brown Sugar Cinnamon Bagel (S$3.20), Matcha Red Bean Mochi (S$3.80), and even Dragonfruit Bagel (S$2.80).

Or the Black Sesame Bagel with homemade sesame paste and crunchy pine nuts makes for a satisfying snack.

I don’t know about you but I’ve been seeing the viral milk bread loaf appearing all over my FYP lately. 

So, I was delighted to find that they actually have their own Hokkaido Milk Toast (S$4.20) and it is reasonably priced as well (now, I don’t have to travel all the way to Japan just to satisfy my cravings). 

Besides the milk loaf which has a sweeter profile, there are other savoury loaves including Salted Egg Yolk (S$5.30), Ham Onion Toast (S$5.30), and Cream Sourdough (S$3.50).

But, if you’re looking for something that is less filling, they have an assortment of breakfast buns from the classic Frankfurt Sausage Bun (S$3.50) and Shio Pan (S$2.30) Coffee Milk Crisp Bun (S$2.60) to unique combinations like Caramel Basque Bun (S$3.50) or Lotus Bun (S$2.80).

Can’t get enough of taro-related desserts?

It seems like they have come up with their own creative spin to the taro dessert and created a savoury-sweet combination with the Taro Salted Egg (S$3.50). 

Alternatively, you’ll never go wrong with the Taro Mochi (S$3.20) filled with a slightly  chewy, glutinous mochi and smooth taro paste.

As they’re open from 8am to 6pm during the weekdays, it seems like the perfect spot to drop by for a light snack whenever you’re feeling peckish after office meetings or rushing deadlines.

It’s not hard to admit that the bread game in Japan is on a whole other level. 

That is why I was so excited to discover Morimori Yogashi Bakery in Everton Park selling Japanese pastries (now I can have a taste of Japan without travelling). 

Headed by a young chef who formerly worked at Marina Bay Sands and a Michelin star restaurant for three years perfecting his craft, you can expect to find a fusion of French and Japanese bread here. 

If you’re not sure where to start, get the signature Fujisawa Garlic Cheese (S$3) loaded with Japanese mayo filling and a ton of garlic for an intense garlicky flavour. 

One piece is never enough (at least for me), but luckily they offer it in various bundles such as S$6 for two pieces or S$11 for four pieces. 

Just don’t eat it before a first date if you know what I mean. 

Another crowd favourite is the Japanese Mentaiko Seaweed Cheese Bread (S$12 for 4 pcs) featuring a generous spread of cod fish roe mixed with mayo on a soft bun.

Every bite is a burst of creamy umami with a slight heat — super delicious.  

They’ve got other breads as well such as Shio Pan, Japanese Curry and Japanese Sweet Potato Bread starting from S$2. 

If you’re with company and feeling a little peckish, the Large Signature Fujisawa Garlic Bread (S$9) is more than enough to keep everyone satisfied.

Bread can get filling rather quickly but you can always try out their mini snacks instead. 

Go for the Kinako Warabi Mochi (S$13.90 for 16 pcs) or the Matcha Warabi Mochi (S$14.90 for 16 pcs). It comes coated in a nutty and earthy powder, so feel free to enjoy it with kuromitsu syrup (black sugar) for a subtle sweetness.

The perfect treat if you enjoy food with chewy and soft textures. 

Speaking of chilled desserts, enjoy their limited edition Hokkaido Milk with Premium Mao Shan Wang Durian Puff (S$36 for 6 pcs). You can tell that they don’t skimp on ingredients here from the lava-filled durian cream.

If you consider yourself a durian connoisseur, get the Hokkaido Milk with D24 Durian Puff (S$28 for 6 pcs) which may just steal your heart.

Want something to bring home? 

The Hokkaido Milk Roll (S$15) comes in various flavours including Mango Passionfruit, Taro Yam, Matcha Yuzu Red Bean and more!

Sink your teeth into the light and fluffy sponge cake, layered with soft velvety cream. 

If you’re not going to Japan anytime soon, Morimori Yogashi Bakery is a good place to satisfy those cravings (I mean the choices that you can get are truly endless).

Fortunately, New Deli Bakes, located in Tampines, specialises in breakfast pastries. The owner-baker, who was formerly from Tiong Bahru Bakery, started this business at home during COVID, before eventually opening a physical bakery. 

French pastries can get pretty pricey, especially kouign-amanns, because of the premium ingredients and tedious process it takes to make them.

However, this bakery sells Vanilla kouign-amann at just S$4.60. They even use vanilla bean pods exclusively sourced from Papua New Guinea that go hand in hand with the French butter.

Calling all tea lovers! Their seasonal menu also includes a Double matcha croissant (S$6.50), all of which are generously loaded with a rich matcha cream filling. Pair your matcha tea with these croissants and you’ll be in for an ultimate matcha party.

Besides the matcha, they also offer a Double Hojicha croissant (S$6.50) filled with their homemade Hojicha filling. Perfect if you can’t get enough of that rich, smoky, and nutty flavour.

Here’s something that we don’t see everyday. It is the New Deli Bakery nutella tart priced at S$20. Doesn’t it look like mini kouign-amanns with Nutella piped on top? So adorable. 

Order these bite-sized tarts if you are someone who enjoys snacking throughout the day.

Besides that, New Deli Bakes also serves an assortment of bakes such as Almond croissant (S$5.80), Rosemary, garlic and smoked cheddar spiral (S$4.90), Tomato, pesto & cheddar croissant (S$5.60) and more!

But what if I told you that there is a local bakery in the heartlands that sells delicious home-baked tarts at affordable prices?

YM Bakery is a quaint little bakery situated in the basement of Paya Lebar Quarter that specialises in tarts, pastries, quiches, and more! 

It did not come as a surprise to me that these tarts look absolutely pretty and delectable and just on aesthetics alone, those desserts look like they are calling out to me through the display glass. To which I will, of course, answer.

There is a fairly modest selection of flavours at YM Bakery given that the owners have chosen to focus on a range of classic flavours, with the occasional seasonal flavour. 

If you are a fan of citrus and tangy flavours, the signature Lemon Meringue Tart (S$3) could be right up your alley, with a buttery crust and a good blend of sweet and sour that bursts in your mouth. 

You can also try the Passionfruit Tart (S$3.70) that has more of a passionfruit zest kick to it.

For more earthy flavours, the Pecan Pie (S$4.70) has more of an almond nutty taste to it and it might appeal to those who enjoy more caramel flavours. Their Banoffee Tart (S$4.40), as you can guess from the name, is a combination of banana and coffee flavours whirled together in a delicious slice.  Enjoying this tart with coffee is a definite must-try. 

Aside from their signature tarts, YM Bakery also sells quiches for the lovers of all things savoury. Their Spinach and Mushroom Quiche (S$3) is a crowd favourite, boasting a crusty and buttery quiche base that is not at all greasy.

If you find yourself a little too busy to head down to PLQ for this bakery , you can also call in to pre-order bakes before collecting them from the store. 

Do take note that it’s best to do it at least two business days before picking up your goodies so that YM Bakery has enough time to prepare your order!

So don’t forget to stop by this bakery and grab some tarts at YM Bakery the next time you find yourself travelling to the East!
