So, it should be no surprise that the world’s first POP MART theme park — POP LAND — has quickly become a bucket list destination for fans.

POP LAND has revamped the largest park in Beijing, China, Chaoyang Park, into an immersive leisure and entertainment space filled with beloved characters like Molly, Labubu, Dimoo and more.

Don’t expect the POP MART theme park to have roller coasters and pirate ships on the scale of Universal Studios and Disneyland though. Rather than an amusement park filled with thrilling rides and the exhilarated screams of other guests, POP LAND has taken inspiration from Japan’s Ghibli Museum and Shiroi Koibito Park (yes, that famous Hokkaido White Lover chocolate biscuit).

Built for fans to relax and immerse themselves in a haven of their favourite characters, the park is divided into three main areas: Pop Street, Labubu Adventure Forest, and Molly’s Castle.

Pop Street

Welcoming you at the entrance of the theme park is the colourful Pop Street, which promises a fantastical experience with tons of  interactive activities, games and shopping. There are stores, statues and various architecture featuring different characters like Molly, Skullpanda, PUCKY, more.

Labubu Adventure Forest

Pass through Pop Street to find the Labubu Adventure Forest, the living place of THE MONSTERS. You’ll be able to see the family of mischievous creatures in their natural habitat. But be careful, this place is also a forest of unexpected encounters! Here’s where you can find 19 life-sized Labubu, alongside Zimomo, Tycoco, Spooky and Pato, which may emerge when you least expect it!

The lore of THE MONSTERS has been integrated into the landscape in the forms of unique areas including a fishing village, a treehouse, and a Village of Warriors. There’s also a 1100 square metre adventure playground with trampolines, swings, climbing walls and nets, mazes and more for children to enjoy themselves.

Molly’s Castle 

To the east of the park stands Molly’s Castle with three levels and a mysterious basement. You can play to your hearts’ content at experiential gaming installations and less intense family-friendly attractions, dine at the two themed restaurants and snag exclusive POP LAND merchandise at the souvenir store within the castle.

Stroll through the first floor museum showcasing POP MART’s popular collections and its history, then grab some exclusive POP LAND merch at Molly Toy’s House. Head up the second and third floors for a shop and dine extravaganza — from the food to the furniture and decorations being sold, there’s nothing that is not character themed!

But what about the mysterious basement? Visitors will be able to enter the nighttime immersive experience “Journey of Wishes”, and Molly is, of course, the main character of this story. Big Ear has gone missing, and the wishes of Molly, Dimoo and her other friends have them come together to create…the rest is a secret!

Here’s a little spoiler for you: you’ll be able to experience POP MART’s entire toy-making process up close.

Fans shouldn’t miss out on the chance to grab the incredible MEGA ROYAL MOLLY 400% figurine, standing at four times the size of your usual Molly! There are also POP LAND exclusive fridge magnet blind boxes, hair bands, keychains, plushies and extremely cute character bags that have my mouse hovering on an airplane ticket to Beijing!

Well, hear me out. This isn’t the real Santorini in Greece, instead it’s Cameron Santorini, located in Cameron Highlands. While you won’t actually be in Santorini, you will be surrounded by the beautiful white and blue Mediterranean houses that really resemble the ones in Greece. 

The Santorini-inspired attraction is nestled in a farm near Water Cress Valley and you can expect to pose with the beautiful white houses and blue dome churches in the background. If you come around sunset, you might even be able to catch a pretty magnificent view of the evening skies. 

Cameron Santorini is open from 9am to 6pm daily and entrance into the attraction costs S$11.38 (RM40) for adults and S$3.41 (RM12) for children, aged five to 12 years old. 

There’s also a cafe and gift shop on-site for you to grab a bite or maybe a couple of souvenirs to take home with you. Apart from exploring Cameron Santorini, you can also check out the little farms in the area like the floral gardens or even the petting zoo.

Upon entering the Central Garden, you’ll be greeted by the delightful fragrance of blooming flowers. Mounds of daisies, amaranth, orchids and other colourful flowers will fill every corner of your vision. Paired with the glimmering sunlight shining through the translucent ceiling, you’ll have plenty of stunning shots for your IG feed. 

There’s even a Secret Garden with windmills spinning lazily in the breeze. Enjoy different species of flowers and vibrant sights here as you stroll through with your family or friends.

If your relationship is on the rockier side, you might prefer the Cactus Walk, with plenty of prickly cacti and aesthetic succulents that will remind you that as there is life in a desert, there is still hope for your relationship.

The most exciting part of the place, apart from being in Santorini, is the bird park and zoo, where you can find the chance to get up close and personal with parakeets, sheeps, cats, rabbits and other adorable animals.

You will be allowed to pet the birds as well as feed them with bird feed right from your hand! Parrots, mandarin ducks and majestic peacocks also roam about the bird park, which you’ll be able to easily spot on the suspended walkway through the park.

Interact with the woolly sheep and gentle lop bunnies, or join the cats in their playroom where you can get to hang out with them.

Feeling a little peckish? Enjoy a strawberry cheesecake from Ori Cakes on a hilltop cafeteria with an amazing panoramic view, or you could indulge in a substantial meal at the food court right by the entrance of the Market.

Once you’ve eaten your fill, spend the rest of the time shopping at the market below with all sorts of knick-knacks, fresh vegetables, flowers and souvenirs that you can bring home for your friends and family.

Tickets for Agro Market cost only S$7.30 (RM25) for adults, and S$2.92 (RM10) for children above three.

Kallang residents are definitely very onn’z about Onn Vegetarian — ask them what’s the best vegetarian stall in the area and they’ll most likely name this humble stall inside WuFu Coffeeshop. Even with irregular opening timings, what keeps the customers coming back is the fresh experience with daily changing menus feature new vegetarian and vegan dishes to try almost every day.

27. Yi Su Pin Vegan 一素品

Yi Su Pin Vegan serves up allium-free and vegan local favourites like Sarawak Kolo Dry Noodles (S$5), Vegan Nyonya Rendang Nasi Lemak (S$5.50), and Vegan Bak Kut Teh with Brown Rice (S$6).

Craving for some vegetarian dim sum? Lotus Vegetarian Restaurant has got you covered with their dim sum menu from 3pm to 5pm. Although there’s only a two hour window to taste their Truffle Mixed Mushroom Dumplings (S$4.80), Mala Crystal Dumplings (S$4.80) and Veggie Scallop Yam Fritters (S$5.80), they’ve got an all-day ala carte menu for other mains like stir-frys, noodles and more.

You’ve probably heard of this famous Indian vegetarian restaurant in Little India. With its long history of 76 years and having earned praise from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it’s no surprise that Komala Vilas is listed as one of Singapore’s Heritage Brands. 

A cup of fragrant Filter Coffee (S$1.50) paired with Onion Rawa Dosai (S$5.30) or Poori (S$4.70) is usually the breakfast of choice of most visitors.

This is your chance to try out celebrity chef-crafted bowls that are inspired by famous cities across Asia. MasterChef Singapore judge Bjorn Shen’s Saigon bowl (from S$10) sees lemongrass tofu on Vietnamese rice noodles, while his Kyoto bowl (from S$10) has brown rice topped with kosho oyster mushrooms and other savoury ingredients.

They have really unique charcoal hotpot in five flavours, including Yuzu Coconut Miso, Laksa, Herby Tomato, Soymilk Miso and Fish Head! Pair the hotpot with crowd favourites like Xinghua Fried Beehoon and Pumpkin Butter Mushroom.

34. Lilac Oak

This minimalistic vegan cafe proves that being allium-free doesn’t mean minimal taste. Their dishes and desserts are anything but minimal — every bite is a burst of flavour and will surprise even your non-vegan friends. 

Their gelato and waffles are some of the best, not to mention their creative take on Asian and Western cuisine like the Gochujang Rose Penne (S$16.90) and Peanut Tempeh Sandwich (S$10.90).

It’s highly affordable considering its location, with prices ranging around S$5 for a plate of cai fan and around S$6 to S$8 for ala carte items like Assam Laksa, Olive Knife Noodles, and Spaghetti. There’s quite a crowd during peak hours so head down earlier to secure your seats.

Botanict is your answer to vegetarian and vegan Nyonya cuisine. We’ve got another hidden gem in Chinatown, literally. Lian Xin is a vegetarian food court hidden in the basement of the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, serving affordable cai fan, western food like tomato truffle pasta, curry noodles, desserts and drinks. The stalls operate with daily menus rotating weekly, and it only costs S$5 to get a three-course meal at the Western food stall.

Last but not least, Kunthaville serves vegan-friendly Ceylonese (Sri Lankan) cuisine in an elegant colonial-style conservation shophouse. Start off with Kunthaville’s Spicy Beetroot Cutlets with Mango, Avocado, and Green Salad in Lime Mustard (S$12) and Jackfruit Rolls (S$14) or whet your appetite with their Sweet Gundappam (S$14) that comes with a coconut chambal (sambal) and coconut milk.

About the Argo Parahyangan Panoramic train

With large viewing windows that run from floor to ceiling not unlike the famous Glacier Express of Switzerland, you’ll be getting a 180-degree view of everything Indonesia has to offer in just three hours on the Argo Parahyangan Panoramic train.

Your Panoramic train ticket covers more than just a plush reclining seat and ample leg space. You’ll have access to the KAI Luxury Lounge at the station, featuring plenty of refreshments and small bites like cakes, toast, fruits and more.

Don’t stuff yourself full at the KAI Luxury Lounge because there will be complimentary drinks and food onboard the train. Not to mention — free WiFi, television, power outlets, tray tables, reading lights and more amenities for your maximum comfort.

The Argo Parahyangan Panoramic train runs between Jakarta and Bandung, but there are also other panoramic trains that will bring you to other major cities all across the country.

Overview of the Jakarta-Bandung route

If you’re travelling from Gambir Station, you’ll be able to see the bustling streets of Jakarta as the train weaves through the urban landscape. The Argo Parahyangan train is similar to an express train, and will only be making quick stops at Bekasi Station before running uninterrupted all the way to Cimahi Station and finally, Bandung Station.

Most of the sights begin after you pass Purwakarta Station, which is also known as the train graveyard. Vast blue skies and looming mountains in the distance will accompany you throughout the ride, along with lush rice terraces, valleys, forests, historical railway structures, and plenty of elevated bridges like the Cisomang Bridge and Cikubang Bridge that will make you feel as if you’re floating above the world.

How to buy Panoramic train tickets

Before we delve deeper into the heart of the journey, there’s something important to know about the Panoramic trains. There is only a single Panoramic-class carriage with 38 seats, while the other carriages feature regular cabins from Economy to Luxury classes.

“38? That’s too little! I definitely won’t be able to get one!” — is probably what you’re thinking, but don’t give up just yet. It’s easier than you think to secure a spot as the trains run twice daily. One runs in the morning at 9.30am, and another in the evening at 7.45pm.

While tickets for the morning train usually sell like hotcakes, all you need to do to guarantee yourself a seat is to book a week ahead, avoiding Fridays and the weekends when many locals will also be travelling.

Typically, guides will advise you to avoid third-party websites and book directly from official websites, but you’ll have no choice but to do the opposite here. 

The official booking site of railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) only accepts Indonesian credit cards and phone numbers, so I recommend using partner websites like Tiket or Traveloka which accept foreign cards with a small booking fee.

An important thing to note is that Panoramic-class tickets usually do not show up immediately. Make use of the “Train Name” filter and select “Argo Parahyangan Panoramic” for an easier booking process.

How to get the best views

If you’re wondering which side of the train to pick for the best views — save yourself from the trouble. Seats on both sides of the train will have equally great views. (I mean, it’s a panoramic train after all.)

However, you might want to avoid taking the train during March to April, and October to November since rice harvesting takes place during these months. Otherwise, the monsoon season of November to March is your best bet for flourishing green rice terraces.

What to look out for on your journey

Your journey begins before you get on the Panoramic train.

Arrive early to Gambir Station (if you’re travelling from Jakarta) or Bandung Station and check in with the e-ticket from Tiket or Traveloka for your boarding pass. The boarding pass will grant you access to the KAI Luxury Lounge and you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast there before it’s time to board the train.

Leave your luggage with the capable attendants of the Argo Parahyangan Panoramic train when you board. They’ll be placed at the end of the train so it doesn’t obstruct the views. Even if you don’t have any luggage, you get to keep the tag as a souvenir.

Then it’s time to kick back and relax! Train attendants will be distributing a snack box filled with treats like buns or pastries, as well as water and juice boxes. You’ll have free-flow hot drinks like chocolate, coffee and tea as well, so don’t be shy when it comes to asking for seconds or thirds.

Purwakarta Station

You’ll cross Purwakarta Station near the last hour of your journey. Although its other name is the Train Graveyard, the station itself has been in operation since 1902.

Keep your eyes peeled for the out-of-service train cars stacked upon each other like Disney Tsum Tsum plushies as the Argo Parahyangan rolls into the station. There are more than 180 used trains that have come to rest there, making it a unique tourist spot for train enthusiasts.

Rice Terraces and sweeping views

Much of your journey from here onwards will be elevated, meaning you’ll be getting quite the birds’ eye view of rural Indonesia and the picturesque rice terraces that you’ll pass by along the way. 

Unlike the first part of the journey which was mostly in straight lines, this will also be your chance to get some beautiful shots of the train body from the full windows as it twists and turns through the countryside.

Cisomang Railway Bridge

You’ll climb up to the Cisomang Railway Bridge, currently the highest railway bridge in Indonesia, standing almost 100m above the Cisomang River. Cruise along the treetops, where the horizons stretch out into the distance, and witness the river below you carving through an idyllic valley.

You may even spot daredevils climbing the rusted steel frame remains of a bridge right beside your window. That’s the Old Cisomang Bridge which had served Indonesia for more than a hundred years before it retired. The bridge you’re on would be the new Cisomang Bridge which began service in 2004.

Sasaksaat Tunnel

In addition to panoramic views, this train journey offers an opportunity to explore Indonesia’s rich historical railway structures. You’ll be passing through the longest active railway tunnel in the country, spanning 949 metres long. The Sasaksaat Tunnel was built during the Dutch colonial rule in 1902 and is intricately connected with Sasaksaat Station, which holds a few stories of its own that’s deeply intertwined in the nation’s history.

Cikubang Bridge

The Cikubang Bridge breaks the longest railway bridge record, stretching 300 metres across two deep gorges, and 80m above the Cikubang River. It’s just as old as many of the historic structures, being in operation since 1906.

You may want to gaze at the paddy fields below and to your right for the highway that you’ll be passing under soon.

Treat yourself to a relaxing journey through the verdant countryside of Indonesia on a luxurious panoramic train for your holidays. Even first-class seats on planes don’t offer such wonderful views — so what’s there to think about? Start planning your journey now!

Hou Lah, which opened recently on 2 December 2023, is located along North Bridge Road, right in between Lavender, Jalan Besar and Bugis MRT Stations. They’ve come all the way from Taiwan, and originally started as pop-ups in night markets and food shows.

You might have spotted them at Artbox 2023 or Singapore Food & Beverage Fair 2023 as Hou Hou De, selling their signature buttery thick toasts that are crumbly on the outside and soft as a marshmallow on the inside. 

But now that they’ve launched a brick-and-mortar store, you can enjoy their thick toasts any time you want!

They’ve also expanded their menu with more thick toast flavours, mains and Taiwanese desserts like snow ice (from S$5.80) and more.

You’ll never go wrong with the Original Classic Thick Toast (S$4.80), but I’m definitely eyeing the Earl Grey Creme Thick Toast (S$5.80), which sees milky earl grey-infused cream stacked upon a fluffy toast before being toasted to a crispy golden brown. 

For that extra crunch, go for their Classic Puff Pastry Thick Toast (S$8.80) or check out their other equally delicious flavours like Cheese, Chocolate and Peanut Butter (all S$5.80).

Pair the thick toast with a cup of Mr Brown Blue Mountain Coffee (S$3.60) or Wintermelon Milk Tea (S$4) and you’ve got yourself a perfect breakfast or teatime set!

Alternatively, you can order their thick toast combos that comes with a soft-boiled egg and a drink (milk tea, red tea or wintermelon tea) from S$7.80.

Hou Lah also offers Taiwanese crepes that are rather uncommon in Singapore. This street food delicacy is also known as dan bing (蛋饼), or egg crepe rolls. 

They’ve got quite the range of flavours, with interesting ones like Hash Brown Taiwan Crepe (S$5.20), a chef-recommended Fish Floss Taiwan Crepe (S$6.20) and savoury flavours like Beef (S$6.20), Cheese (S$5.20) and more.

If you’re not satisfied, why not go for their mains instead? Hou Lah won’t disappoint you with their fried Taiwanese noodles, especially their Beef with Cheese and Milk (S$9.20) that mixes creamy cheese with savoury beef, topped off with a runny fried egg. 

Hou Lah’s special noodles series are also highly recommended amongst seafood lovers. Try their Lala Fried Noodles (S$13.20) or Seafood Guo Shao Yi Mian (S$10.80) for some hot, flavourful soup.

Hou Lah is pork and lard-free, so if you’re looking for the usual Taiwanese dishes like braised pork rice, you won’t find them here!

As you might have guessed from their name, Chirashi Ape focuses on chirashi don, comprising sashimi atop with a bowl of sushi rice. But there is something more special on the menu — truffle oil-infused rice.

No doubt this is the influence of one of Chirashi Ape’s partners, who is also the founder of Chirashi King Kong, a Japanese eatery known for their aromatic truffle bowls. Chirashi Ape also borrows inspiration from Chirashi King Kong for their interior, featuring red leather seats, neon lighting and colourful posters decorating the walls.

Chirashi Ape has pretty reasonable prices, with a Salmon Bowl going for S$9.90 and just an addition of S$2 to switch out sushi rice for truffle rice. Their bowls are definitely worth every penny — just look at how thick and fresh the salmon slices are.

They aren’t sparing any expenses with their Unagi Bowl (S$13.90) too. The unagi slices you’ll get will dwarf the rice, and is just as juicy as it looks. There are plenty of add-ons to make your meal even more scrumptious, including onsen eggs (soft-boiled eggs), green tea for S$1.50 and their highly-rated miso soup for S$2.

Another fan favourite is their Salmon Mentai Bowl (S$10.90) that features nicely seared salmon slices and generous helpings of mentaiko sauce. For a rice alternative, they’ve got Salmon Cold Pasta (S$12.90) made with truffle angel hair, salmon slices and sweet miso.

Chirashi Ape also has other cuts of meat if raw fish isn’t really your thing. Take your pick from bowls of Chicken Teriyaki (S$7.90), Beef Curry (S$9.90), seared Smoke Duck (S$8.90) with honey sauce and more.

Best thing of all, there’s also a discount for students so remember to flash your student card before you pay!

It’s not everyday that you come across Muslim-owned Japanese restaurants in Singapore, so head down to show your support if you’re in the area!

Chankonabe, also known as “sumo hotpot”, is packed full of protein and collagen despite being low calorie, and is the preferred dish for sumo wrestlers to build up their muscle mass during training. Sumo wrestlers may look big and chonky, but it’s mostly muscle that they’re packing, not fats!

You too, can get those gains by enjoying a steaming Chanko hotpot at ENChanko, Singapore’s first chankonabe specialty restaurant. Ladies will want to check out their collagen soup bases (addition of S$3) for unblemished, smooth skin as well. 

We were drawn to the Buta Motsu Chankonabe (from S$30) as it featured ingredients that any kway chap lover would go gaga for, like pork stomach, large intestines, tendon, Iberico pork tsukune (meatballs), vegetables, mushrooms, glass noodles and more.

The pork innards were chewy and flavourful without any unpleasant fishy odour. Combined with the umami of the fresh ingredients and rich, milky collagen soup that had been steeped for over 10 hours, I found myself devouring bowl after bowl.

If you aren’t a fan of innards, you can opt for their chicken-based Signature Tori Chankonabe (from S$30) or the seafood-filled Kaisen Chankonabe (from S$39) instead.

Do note that these chankonabes are meant to be shared between two or more people, but there are also individual hotpots (from S$14.80) with more options like Miyazaki Wagyu, Hokkaido Pork, and even a vegetarian-friendly nabe.

Don’t forget to add-on their Himokawa Udon (S$6.80) — ENChanko is the only place in Singapore where you can get this flat and wide udon that’s been trending all over TikTok. 

It’s served on a bed of ice and you can eat it straight from the plate, or swish it around in the nabe for a few seconds before dipping it in the accompanying sauces (especially their sesame sauce!).

You should also try out their unique Mochi Kinchaku (S$6.80), a tofu moneybag that’s stuffed with really stretchy mochi.

ENChanko also offers kamameshi, another traditional Japanese dish that’s hard to find in Singapore. Think of an amalgamation of claypot rice and chazuke, but with an iron pot and genmai dashi stock instead.

Kamameshi has a unique way of eating that offers diners two different experiences in one dish. When it is served, mix the rice and ingredients and enjoy a few spoonfuls of it “dry” first. For the second step, pour the genmai dashi in and let it simmer with the lid on for a minute or two. Mix well after opening and you’ll find that it tastes wildly different from the “dry” rice.

We went for the Miyazaki Wagyu Truffle & Ikura (S$39) kamameshi, which blew us away with the pairing of tender wagyu and a strong but not overpowering truffle scent. Not to mention, the juicy ikura that exploded with each bite was simply just *chef’s kiss*!

The highlight for me was scraping the bottom of my pot for that crunchy, scorched rice infused with all the rich flavours of the dashi and ingredients. 

There’s an ongoing promotion until 8 December 2023 where diners can enjoy complimentary Kamameshi sets with any order of sharing hotpots, so there’s no better time than now to bring your friends out for a gathering at ENChanko!

Although Nuo Yuan specialises in mochi desserts, they have quite the range of taro options for taro fans like us to indulge in. Most notably, they have DIY mochi where you can choose from seven flavours of mochi skin and 18 fillings to stuff your mochi with.

Nuo Yuan’s mochi skins are known to be chewy and super elastic, and they come in flavours like pandan, milk, purple sweet potato, and more.

Taro paste is (of course) amongst the selection of fillings, along with red bean, shredded coconut, black sesame, biscoff, oreo and even fruits and ice cream. A popular combination that taro fans would go for is a pandan mochi skin filled with taro paste, cream cheese or vanilla ice cream and purple rice.

Those who prefer a more savoury mochi can even add salted egg yolk and chicken floss to their mochi. 

Prices for the DIY mochi starts from S$0.86 (RM3) for a single filling and up to S$2 (RM7) for three fillings. There are extra charges of S$0.29 to S$0.57 (RM1 to RM2) for some of the more luxurious fillings like fresh strawberries and biscoff, but considering how generous Nuo Yuan is with the fillings, I’d say it’s quite a steal!

Leave some space in your stomach for their mochi ice jelly desserts too. The ice jelly (or bingfen) at Nuo Yuan are slurpy, large chunks of konjac jelly that are rather different from Taiwanese aiyu jelly that most Singaporeans are familiar with. It’s a rare find in Singapore, and it’s even rarer to find it paired with mochi!

Nuo Yuan has a Taro Mochi Ice Jelly Bucket (S$4.57, RM16) that’s filled to the brim with stretchy mochi, smooth taro paste, purple sweet potato, taro balls, three different types of fruit, sago, hawthorn and more. They’re very generous with the portions, so it’s best to order a bucket to share!!

They have other mochi ice jelly buckets in flavours like mango, passionfruit, rose and osmanthus as well.

But that’s all — Nuo Yuan has quite a few unique desserts like fried mochi, dipping mochi, cheese foam purple rice milk brick, and a fried taro and purple sweet potato sandwich cookie that are worth the extra visits.

Taro purple rice milk brick was a viral dessert on Douyin, and Nuo Yuan has recreated it with taro paste and purple rice, topped with purple sweet potato powder and sea salt cheese foam.

The sea salt cheese foam also makes another appearance as the dipping sauce for Nuo Yuan’s dipping mochi series, which has earned quite a name amongst visitors. If you’re feeling adventurous, you should also check out their fried mochi (S$2.86 for 4, RM10) which comes in seven flavours, one of them being sambal!

Take home ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove’s latest Honey Pear Log Cake (S$78) that sounds, looks, and tastes dreamy. You won’t be able to stop taking bite after bite of the fluffy Japanese sponge cake that’s generously slathered with honey pear puree.

Aside from panettone (from S$75), a traditional sweet bread that is gifted to loved ones in Italy during Christmas, Da Paolo Gastronomia also has a unique White Forest Log Cake (S$89) that you should definitely check out for its rich rum-spiked morello cherry compote, white chocolate yogurt Chantilly and crunchy white chocolate pearls. 

They too have their own take on the traditional German Christmas bread, Homemade Stollen (S$48), which features a nutty marzipan centre.
